Need job advice
Here's the situation: I currently work for a very small firm of 3 quasi-partners (they have a very loose partnership). I am also in the middle of looking for a new job because, like I said, this is a very small firm, and unless they make me a partner, there's no where for me to move up. One of the three (but not the main guy) used to work as an exec in the same organization as the president of the firm whom has a job opening. He almost definitely knows the guy.

So is it alright if I ask him to make some calls for me?

I would say yes - If you know you're not staying there how can it hurt?

2. Well, it's a job hunt.
Meaning, I don't have another job in hand. Meaning, I don't know how long I'm staying here.

5. Right...
but if you let them know you are at least interested in something more, even if it is at another firm, it will make them aware of your needs. If you are someone they want to keep - they could make it worth your while to stay. If they can't give you the position you want and are decent people, they should help you find another position. It all depends who you're dealing with - that's the question you have to answer.

3. If you take it to him like this
These three guys know there's nowhere for you to move in their company; they can't be *that* obtuse (unless they are?) Tell him that you are interested in moving up in your career, and that this opportunity has come along and what does he think of the organization? I would stress that you don't hate the place you are now, and that you aren't interested so much in leaving them as in moving forward in your career. Maybe also ask if they have plans on expanding or moving you up themselves?

4. No, they're not expanding.
Owner has made it clear that he's never had any intentions on growing the firm because he's old and doesn't want to manage anything.

6. Hm
Well, my vote is still to talk to the one who has the connection with the other company, unless office politics or personalities make that unwise (like where I work!)
