Poll question: Should we eat this chicken?
Last night, mrs. wt2 went grocery shopping ... we put away all the stuff that needed to go in the freezer and the refrigerator but forgot to put away a pound of fresh chicken filets ... they were out for about 12 hours in our 60 degree house ... mrs. wt2 is convinced we'll get food poisoning if we eat them ... i'm not so sure ...

what should we do with the chicken???

15. Well, if you're gonna go straight to that, then fine.
But don't expect the chicken to be very happy.

3. If you want to get a week off work...
and lose 10 lbs from puking and not eating, I say go for it.

Otherwise, just toss the meat. Nothing good can come of eating it.

4. Don't risk it.
Better safe that sorry -- chicken is not that good nor that expensive to warrant the risk... Don't eat it!!

Boy, the conversations we have here on DU...

5. Do NOT, I repeat do NOT eat that chicken!
Poultry products should be refrigerated within 2 hours. If not, they are breeding grounds for salmonella, camphylobacter, and other nasty critters. Not worth the risk- chuck the cutlets!

8. well ...
actually meant to post this in the lounge ...

but this is an important topic (i.e. food safety) and sometimes the posts in GD are more serious than responses one might receive in the Lounge ...

anyway, thanks for the feedback ...

9. If you ever had food poisoning you wouldn't even ask the question
Edited on Thu Mar-31-05 10:06 AM by Love Bug
I got food poisoning from chicken once, and I can tell you, that is not an experience I would ever care to repeat! Toss it -- it's much cheaper to buy another package of chicken than possibly end up in the emergency room!

11. It's poisoned
After about 4 hours in the room temperature range, assuming the chicken was under 40 degrees previously, bacteria starts growing.

12. Food safety standards call for a safe exposure time of two hours
Then allows a one hour grace period in some cases before the "plate count" (number of bad bugs that grew) is in the danger zone.

Said another way, no food should be outside the temperature safety zone (under 45 or above 150) for more than two hours.

I suspect your chicken tenders are now a lab experiment. I wouldn't eat it.

13. If you HAVE to cook it
Cut it up into really small pieces, fry it up, then and cook it into a stew. No bacteria will survive all that.

16. True. But toxins might.
Toxic but not infectious is an improvement, but not good.

17. When in doubt, throw it out.
Some of the Old Sayings are worth repeating.

Unless you really want to experience projectile vomiting....
