6. There are no stupid questions...just unasked ones.
I'm a journalist, too. Yep, I'd ask. It would be a bit of factually based imagery and emotion I could add to my story that would make it less cut and dried, to describe the atmosphere in the room in her final moments and try to set the proper respectful tone, rather than just printing a dry recitation of facts. I know how to do my job well.

5. Not an excuse
It's just the truth sometimes.

For example, in a story I wrote about a girl who tore her ACL, I had to ask "is she out for the season?" just so I can have confirmation of it on the record.

That was a stupid question, obviously she's going to be out for the season if she tore her ACL.

That's what I meant by it. I wasn't trying to defend those people.:)
