Why do freepers and fundies feel the need to rewrite history
Example: The topic of slavery in the US came up and my freeper dad said, "I do not believe the slaves were treated as badly as they would have you think!"

:wtf:

8. true,
I just hate how the history I learned as a child about slavery and the civil war is being "revised" now.

16. I don't think they will get it through
there are too many books and articles about how it was. And I think they still teach the right version in school

3. Bad news
Everybody likes to revise history to suit their own preconceptions.

On the bright side, some revisions are so blatantly wrong that they're easy and fun to correct.

Example: if slavery was so great, have its apologists explain the Nat Turner rebellion or the Haitian revolt.

7. Exactly - there is no such thing as an unbiased account
But some are so off the scale (rather like a copy of the Washington Times) that one can discount them immediately.

On slavery, we do have to acknowledge that as there were a fair few slave owners; like all groups of people some would have been better than others, i.e., less harsh on their slaves than others. In pure economic terms many of the slaves in the American south were better off than many northern freemen.

The point about slavery is not that it was horrid, but rather that it was wrong and evil.

6. because reality exposes how wrong they are
it challenges their delusions

they learn to deal with cognitive dissonance *within* their delusional peer group (for example, listen to Limbaugh systematically program them to believe two contradictory things. It happens virtually every day).

But when reality imposes an undeniable contradiction, they have to deny the truth. Intelligent design proponents are laughable at this.

Plus, there's just a big dose of good old fashioned wishful thinking, plus flat-out ignorance.

If I hadn't been so damn shocked - my brain ceased to work.

That picture sums it up perfectly!

11. because they were usually wrong
Freepers and fundies were usually on the wrong side of history so they need to rewrite it.

12. It doesn't matter if they were treated
like kings...they were still slaves, their very beings owned by someone else. That alone is despicable in itself and not worthy of being defended.

14. Not only that, they seem to want to rewrite history in your face.
Fundie-freepers are **always** publicly shopping for customers for their craziness. The also have taken self-righteousness and mock outrage to new extremes.

Hey, what happened? This is the Lounge!!!!!

18. Facts are stupid things
(For you young'uns, it's an old quote from Ronald Reagan. The cue card said "Facts are stubborn things" but, already suffering from Alzheimer's, he muffed it.)
