So what the fuck ELSE am I doing that's morally reprehensible?
Edited on Wed Mar-30-05 10:42 PM by Redstone
I don't get it...I met a bunch of DUers in Cambridge who were a happy lot, drinking and smoking and laughing and yakking and having a good time one and all.

But here on the boards, you can scarce draw a breath without someone jumping up in your face and sternly advising you that you are Upsetting The Balance Of The Universe with your reckless, dangerous, antisocial, and just generally sleazy self and the horrible things you do.

That's right, YOU! How DARE you eat meat, wear leather shoes, smoke cigs, admire pretty women, drive fast cars, point out that people in Labrador might need to kill seals so they can feed their families because it's not like there are a lot of Web-design jobs up there, not weep at the plight of the Indians even if you are one (How DARE you not hate white people?), hope that virulent pustule Falwell dies painfully and alone, not give a red rat's ass about religion one way or the other, eat eggs and cheese even if you don't eat meat, wonder why they pronounce it "VEEGan" (do they eat "VEEGtables?), be less than adoring of cats, AND NOW, FURTHERMORE...

(drum roll)...HOW DARE YOU FEED THE BIRDS IN YOUR YARD??? (Excuse me, now it's called "baiting wildlife.")

Screw this. I'm going to continue mowing my lawn (actually, I'm going to continue making my son mow the lawn), even if it does make the poor, defensless grassies shriek in agony, and you know what else? When it's time to put the garden, I'm going to DIG HOLES IN THE EARTH in order to plant the plants!!

And I don't care how many people call me names for doing it, when fishing season starts, I'm going to TEAR POOR, DEFENSLESS WORMS FROM THEIR HOMES and impale them on sharp hooks in order to catch my breakfast trout.

And worst of all, when skeeter season starts, I'm going to slather myself witrh repellent, and DENY THE POOR MOSQUITOES THEIR NATURAL OPPORTUNITY TO BITE ME. Ha!

So there.

PS: As noted above, this rant does not apply to the Cambridge crowd, or similar DU crowds elsewhere. Just the lecturers.

Edited on Wed Mar-30-05 11:02 PM by Redstone
and I'm sure that any group that includes you would be just as much fun as the Cambridge crowd.

Except, with you being Midwesterners, there would probably be a lot more pork loin involved than there is in New England. Not that I consider that a bad thing; not at all.

22. Have you ever noticed the difference in fishermen by what they fish for?
The Bass guys have all this hi-tech stuff and the boats that look like something out of a Tom Clancy movie.

The Crappie guys all look like they could hang with the Dukes of Hazzard, and actually wear out a pair of Carhardts rather than tear them up.

And the ones going after the Trout all just look skinny... :)

How do you cook your Trout?

29. Good observation about fishermen types...
Edited on Wed Mar-30-05 11:36 PM by Redstone
For myself, I don't like to bass-fish because:

1) Bass are stupid. No respectable trout would be caught dead being fooled by a purple plastic worm with sparkling confetti inside.

2) It's too goddamn hot to go fishing when it gets to be bass season. The skeeters are in full force that time of the year as well.

How to cook trout: There are many ways, and I'm not one to disparage the way of anyone else, but I favor a simple cornmeal coating, thence to the frying pan.

Or a nice troutwich for lunch, with provolone, sliced pickles, and mayo...

Where do you fish?

42. I live about thirty minutes from two stocked lakes.
It ain't optimal, but it is what we have here in Illinois--ya know? I did get to fish Lake Taneycomo one time in Missouri and THAT was a lot of fun even for a rank armature like me.

If I am cooking trout, I tend to roll it in a bit of flour and fry in butter. When the trout is done I thin-slice a few nice mushrooms into the pan and saute those off with a a bit of parsley and put those over the fish...

Man, I do miss fishing. My one fishing buddy moved away for a Doctoral program and I haven't been fishing in a long time. :( I have GOT to get back out again!

37. Having lived in the South, I'd never say
anything negative about catfish fishers. Not even if they use a trotline.

In fact, I'd have to say I kind of admire catfish fishers. They're a pragmatic bunch, understanding that if you're fishing for dinner rather than for sport, you don't need to get fancy at all. Just catch the fish. My kind of folks, actually.

47. Depends on how you do it.
Some of those guys are just NUTS. I had an uncle that went "hawggin" for catfish . "Hawggin" was him wading a river and reaching up under the banks barehanded and dragging those fish out. THAT is just plain crazy in my book...

Seems to me that most of the guys I know that fish for the "cats" are either out to just hang and drink a beer or two while they let the stink bait to the work, or else they are seriously big fans of eating catfish. I've also known a few folks who fish for anything they can get because they are hungry--and I expect there are more than a few that'd be happy to pull a few good sized catfish out of a river or lake.

Frankly, where I live (Illinois) I'd be worried about eating too much catfish because of the higher concentrations of fertilizers in the fish. I have to admit, I'd even be worried about eating too much that came out of the Mississippi, too...

You can't please everyone all the time. Someone's going to get offended and someone's always got some issue (I include myself at times), but all you can do is take leaps and do what feels right for yourself at the time letting the chips fall where they may.

Be true to yourself. Be honest. And hope that matters in the end somehow (or possibly even the journey).

In fact, guilt is a great motivator and ought to be embraced, not avoided.

I can tolerate vegans who live that lifestyle because they like the food or they don't like the processes involved in manufacturing food; but you can take that shit to ridiculous extremes, which I can't fuckin' stand. And I LOVE meat.

either I am not paying attention to the things people say to me, or I have never been the beneficiary of DU "advice" on how to be a better person.

I think I must be oblivious to suggestion - I don't pick up on the lecturing here.... not that it doesn't exist. Au contraire - I'm sure it exists in droves. I have the much appreciated gift of being able to wholly tune out the moment a person says, "You know, you really should..." :)

And FYI - its pronounced "vEEgan" because we do try to be as difficult and perplexing as possible. It's all in the handbook. Which I can't share with you because CLEARLY you are not a vegan. :P
