Boy, did I ever fu** up a Jeep motor today!!!
I bought a 1991 YJ at an estate sale last week. It ran fine but needed a timing chain. Today I stripped the front end down, put in new timing gears and tensioner, etc, rebuilt it, and turned it over...

*******!!!!!!!CRUNCH!!!!!!!*******

*******!!!!!!!NOTHING!!!!!!!*******

*******!!!!!!!SWEARING!!!!!!!*******

After a three hour tear-down to find out what happened, I discovered that I accidentally let a tiny metal clip from the original timing tensioner fall into the oil pan...it got sucked up by the oil pump and managed to do a little tour of the crankshaft. End result: the motor needs to be completely rebuilt!

I fucking RULE!!!!

1. Woohoo!!!
You. Are. The. Man. :woohoo:

I've always thought about having an old Jeep to have some laughs with. It would come in handy for carrying crap around, too.

3. It's pretty fun....
Too bad I'm now about to spend double what I paid for it, just to get it running.

6. There was supposed to be one.
No doubt eliminated, as an Iococca-era cost cutting measure by good ol' Chrysler.

Seriously, this thing was half the diameter of a dime... and what havoc it has wrought!

7. I can imagine
divots in the crank...

It reminds me of a monumental mistake I made with a Dodge Charger once. It had a cable-operated downshift on the automatic trans, I monkeyed with it to change the downshift point. I gave it full throttle at 70 mph and it kicked down into first gear. Broke a rod and threw it right out the oil pan. Made some nice oil flames when it hit the headers..made a hell of a mess on the freeway, too.

12. Best I ever did was...
...first crank on a brand new supercharged Ford 347 (bored-out 302 stroker). Virgin block from FMS, Victor Jr. heads, nice, balanced, polished, ported, perfect in every way, all forged pistons...scary cams...built it for a customer. Forgot to pre-lube the cylinders. SKREEEEEEEE.......KA-BANG!!!!

On the upside, he ran from the car faster than his Mustang ever would!

11. I'm guessing there was a real sinking feeling?
in the pit of your stomach upon realizing the extent of that fuckup?

Ouch! That's why these projects are better left undone. After all, jeeps, or pretty much any car for that matter, once it has enough rust and vines growing up thru it, makes fabulous yard art.

13. That's the irony...
I bought this because it was dirt cheap, and completely rust-free. Usually they're completely rotted out.

This was my first Fivepoint since the slant-six Duster I had in high school. I figured it would be a cheap and easy vehicle for a while.

D'oh!!!

but what doesn't suck is that you will never be ripped off by a mechanic.

18. Well, at least your diagnostic was 100% accurate.
**Big** points for trying, CA. I feel your mechanical pain.

On the upside, you're bonding with the YJ nicely. Once the engine is rebuilt, it'll be smooth sailing. Make that motoring.

Cheers -- :toast:
