Really, if you want to get to know more about Gabriel García Márquez you can start with his short stories. He has some wonderful ones.

so -- which specific book should I start with?

and do a search for Collected Stories by Márquez. It is a collection of some of his short stories.

and I am struggling to become more rounded. I have even bought 33 languages on CD-ROM, now I must pick a couple. My wife can teach me Spanish, from the CDs I am leaning towards Japanese and Russian.
