Severed human foot inquiry is launched

MALIBU – Authorities yesterday were trying to determine whether foul play or an accident was responsible for a severed human foot found by a crew repairing a highway.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department launched an investigation after Monday's discovery by a road crew but released no details yesterday.

The foot, which appeared to belong to a man, was found in Topanga Canyon about 4 miles from Pacific Coast Highway. The foot had been severed from the leg just above the ankle and was found in a pile of landfill dirt, officials said. The foot may have been taken from a landfill used by various businesses.
