Poll question: Best Nirvana album?
Edited on Wed Mar-30-05 12:31 AM by CanuckAmok
I'm currently listening to "In Utero", produced by Steve Albini. As far as I'm concerned, it's the best Nirvana album, by far, and the only one I can enjoy all the way through, to this day.

I'm only going to list official, full-length releases...so don't get all "why didn't you list the Olympia Painter's Hall 1991 cassette, fucker?!" on me, okay?

BTW, April 7 is the ELEVENTH anniversary of Cobain's death... how old does that make you feel?!

1. Nevermind is my favorite
Good poll btw. Haven't thought about Nirvana in a while. They were an awsome band. Their music holds up well too.

11. I'm with you, Nevermind is my favorite
XM radio reintroduced the greatness of Nirvana to me. It had been so long since I'd listened to them, and, boom, it was on the radio.

3. the 'live in New York' one....
I like the talking/teasing between the tracks, in addition to a neat spin on some of the tracks.

11 years, huh?!? That does make me feel old...

5. is that the Unplugged one?
Edited on Wed Mar-30-05 12:20 AM by jdj
I have a live one, I'm not sure if it's that one that is just too gorgeous.

It's...there are no words.

Cobain was like what Don Mclean said about Van Gogh, too beautiful to live.

edit: thanks for adding the Unplugged, that one is one of the best CD's ever of all time.

7. Yup, that one!
I love when he's talking about just doing the whole song in another key, and 'if these people don't like it...' cracks me up every time :)

I miss those guys.

I miss all weird nerdy talented geniuses. Death to metrosexuals, and all purveyors of style over substance.

15. You can't be a full met and be posting about Nirvana...
no way. And especially not if you know the names of their albums.

You might just be a well groomed, good looking, cool person.

18. No, none of the above.
Look at me...tweezed eyebrows, Haida art above my fireplace, Jeep in the garage. And yet I identify with Cobain and Chuck Pahlaniuk.

I deserve to die, really. Maybe after this glass of scotch.

14. LOL
No, really LOL :D

I was only 13 when he killed himself, so I mostly know them 'in retrospect'... never saw them live and wasn't really into their music until after he died. What a group, though.

8. Everytime I listen to "in Utero"...
...I'm torn between thinking that it was a perfect swansong, and that it was just a glimse into what they would have been capable of, had they not imploded. It is unbottled directiinless, disenfranchised rage. It is pure, unfiltered, uncompromised Rock 'n' Roll.

29. You hit it on the head....
I can build a pretty strong case for it as Nirvana's best work, and maybe one of rock's all-time best, period. Deep, dark, and disturbing, all the things that rock-n-roll should be. It's the sound of Cobain losing it, and the band entering the fringes of the abyss with him. Strong stuff, indeed.

16. Incesticide. Just to be different. Just for the title. Just because
they covered an obscure Devo song when Devo was being dismissed.

19. It's "Turnaround"
I think it was a FOC b-side that I missed until this came out:

I was lucky enough last year to find The Complete Truth About De-Evolution in little ol' Courtney's Futureshop last year. I believe it has everything but Are You Experienced, owing to some Hendrix estate battles.

20. {Ed McMahon voice}I did not know that! {/Ed McMahon voice}
Cool. Larraine Newman (original SNL cast) is the 'star' of the Devo movie I have... it's preety great.

That's a sweet find in Courtenay! It's amazing what you can find in the chain stores in small towns, just because the obscure stuff seldom moves off the shelves. I found a bunch of Einsturzende Neubauten rarities in the Nanaimo A&B a few years ago, including FM Einheit's "Radio Inferno", featuring John Peel!

And three copies of the original (and very rare) pressing of KMFDM's "Naive" CD.

22. I think that Larraine Newman clip is on that DVD.
It even has Devo commercials advertising...laserdiscs! They look like they were made for in-store promotion. Still, they're pretty awful!

You reminded me of the days when I was working for HMV in Edmonton. Someone transposed a couple of numerals in a catalog number for Warner product, and instead of getting 50 copies of Allanah Myles or whatever, we got 50 copies of some Throbbing Gristle compilation. Probably all 50 copies in existence in Canada!

is one of my favorite live albums ever. Their own songs they picked work well in that format, and they chose some neat songs to cover, too.

25. It's not very "user friendly"....
Which, I suppose, is the point. I like it, but I have to admit it's not "polished" enough for my admittedly pedestrian tastes.

That version of "Love Buzz", though... WOW!
