Poll question: What is the biggest Cubs choke job?
Edited on Thu Oct-16-03 03:23 AM by DrGonzoLives
Which is it?

I vote for 1969 myself.

2. '84 Absolutely Broke My Heart
I was glad that the Cubs made the playoffs this year -- and especially glad they beat the Braves -- but I had no delusions about winning the World Series so I'm not crushed like I was before.

5. This Cardinals fan agrees with you.
Bad, BAD trade - maybe the worst ever.

4. When Ivan Rodriguez is on the other team, it's not a choke
If you look at the stats, Ivan Rodriguez is the greatest hitting catcher to ever play the game. He is a defensive deamon, and he handles a pitching staff wonderfully. When I-Rod is in the lineup, there is no way you can claim a team he beat choked. He's too spectacular a player.

I am SO glad he is somewhere other than the Rangers now.

6. Pudge is not the best hitting catcher.
Which is a better hitter, player A or player B (all stats through 2002)?

Avg. OBP SLG HR
A .305 .342 .489 215 (in 12 seasons)
B .321 .388 .576 347 (in 11 seasons)

I don't like the Mets. I don't like the Dodgers. I don't like Mike Piazza. It doesn't matter that I'm not a fan of his and I AM a fan of Ivan Rodriguez; the facts are plain:

Mike Piazza is the greatest hitter among all catchers to play the game (with the possible exception of Josh Gibson, but we don't have the numbers for the Negro League).

7. Pudge is a great hitter
He was also 9 for 17 in the NCLS with RISP.

11. With due respect to Pudge
who is having a monster postseason (and I'm glad he's having a chance to win a title), the Cubs choked it, plain and simple. They were at home, with their two studs on the mound - and couldn't win. That is choking.

If the Yankees win tonight, go Marlins.

8. Do they still play the blues in Chicago?

Do they still play the blues in Chicago
When baseball season comes around?
When the snow melts away, do the Cubbies still play
in their ivy covered burial ground?
When I was a boy, they were my pride and joy
but now they only bring fatigue.
To the land of the free, the home of the brave
and the doormat of the National League!

Sorry, it's a song lyric. I don't have the CD handy to give it proper citation.

10. 1969. At least they made the playoffs in '84 and '03
But the memories of '84 are still painful, and now we have 2003 to add to them.

1989 was good. Great team. Won the division. Played in NLCS. Got soundly beaten by the Giants, 4 games to 1. No false hope. That was a much more humane way to lose.

:-(

12. "The biggest choke job since mustard gas was used in WWI"
Couldn't you at least have gagged to the Braves? At least the Braves were in existence before the Internet was, even if it was in three different cities...
