Marry one wife, divorce her -- but she doesn't leave, and neither do the kids.

Marry another, divorce her.

Marry another...

Etc.

Basically, they've come to presume they can't have legal recognition of the kinds of marriages they believe their religion permits -- and so do it anyway. Just without state recognition.

Gay and lesbian couples have had similar 'marriages' for nearly as long. The only thing we lack is state sanction and recognition -- and those 1100+ rights and privileges.
