Is NY Times a right wing rag?
I just got off the phone with a guy who said that he will be sending me one months worth of papers.

I asked him if it was slanted to the right and he immediately told me no. He said that he has been calling Texas and he has been told to
F*ck Off by tons of nuts so NY times must not be slanted to the right.

We got into a conversation about Arnuld and he told me that his family was from Mexico and he didn't know anyone from Mexican heritage who voted for Arnuld. He also said that he didn't understand where Bush's poll numbers are coming from.

The guy talked to me for about 1/2 hour on political issues and he said that the craziest state that he has had to phone was Texas because they think that Bush is helping there state big time.

1. It's Getting There
But probably the best newspaper in the country since they cover everything in-depth.

15. Commentator John Hess
John Hess, who spent his career with the New York Times, has written his memoirs in a book called "My Times". He says the Times has always been moderately conservative and has recently turned sharply to the right.

" ... this isn't a lives of the saints; reporters, to Hess's observation, mostly churned out unambitious, conformist copy, and when they didn't, editors would "fix" it. He argues that the paper deliberately fudged its coverage of Vietnam, at a crucial turn. He revisits the close association of the Sulzberger publishing family with the world leaders the newspaper purported to cover objectively. Later Hess shows that the Times was far better acquainted with the jet-set than with its neglected backyard; few at the paper in the 1970s seemed able to pick out the Bronx on a map ... "

6. I used to think it was an excellent newspaper until the second
Clinton term. Accusations against Clinton related to Whitewater and the Chinese govt gaining nuclear secrets were being run repeatedly in the NYT long after those charges had been completely debunked. The NYT also led the pilloring of Wen Ho Lee long after the evidence evaporated

8. You have got to be joking
No way the NYT is a RW rag especially the way they have pretty much kept up the constant hammering of Bush on the war. You can also tell by the way Rush slams it.

10. I think the Jayson Blair thing has really shaken it up
They've been on pretty good behavior since then and the crisis of Iraq and this scummy administration have sort of woken it up to the perils of blind corporatism. and also where else you 'gonna read Krugman?

11. I lost my faith in the Times during Vietnam
The New York Times is the voice of the East Coast establishment -- the old-line ruling elite and the elite-dominated business firms.

The Times is extremely sophisticated and internationalist. It isn't dominated by neocons or paleocons or fundies or Texas oilmen. But it's got its own agenda, and it has never been a friend of any genuinely left-wing or progressive movements.

If you read the Times regularly, you will know more about the world than the average reader of USA Today. But you will know it from inside a bubble -- a very elegant, tasteful bubble, but a bubble nonetheless. So be warned.

13. Huh?
I wasn't aware that Bill Kristol had anything at all to do with the Times.

If you know otherwise, please let us know.

I have plenty of problems with the Times -- it was absolutely terrible during the Clinton non-scandals for instance -- but it is still the greatest newspaper anywhere in the world in any language I read. I think P.M. was a better newspaper, but it folded in 1948.
