1. Hello from Europe:
a purse is what the french call "Portemonnaie", it's just for money and maybe an ID-Card or credit-cards.
A carry-all is a travelling bag. Usually it contains more underwear and shirts and less money.

8. Oops...
No, no, no. A purse is simply a wallet! You should leave the european article in your hotel, when you go to the beach!

13. That's a pocketbook, not a purse
For some strange reason people now call that a wallet. I have no idea why that changed.

14. no, a pocketbook is a kind of purse
a small purse.

at least that's how I think of it. Women refer to pocketbooks. When have you ever heard a man say he had a pocketbook?

17. You must be young.
Until I was 30 or so, I had never heard a man refer to a pocketbook as a wallet. The word pocketbook was always used to describe what's in the picture.

> Women refer to pocketbooks.

Pocketbooks were small purses that were later called pocketbooks to compare their convenience to a man's pocketbook.

> When have you ever heard a man say he had a pocketbook?

You haven't heard your older male relatives say that? That's surprising.

16. Hmmm, indeed! That's a wallet, to our American eyes.

What do German women call the thing they use to carry their wallet, their lipstick, hairbrush, etc., in?

American women call such a thing a purse, or maybe a pocketbook or handbag. It's usually too small to carry shirts in, though a pair of women's underwear would fit in many purses.

The second is what you would carry in Poland. Don't ever forget Poland.
