So what is the Gungeon?

I was going to try for some witty and mysterious yet dark and vaguely threatening description of the place, but it's late and I'm tired so I went for the direct route. If they're made of stern enough stuff they won't recoil in horror and flee for brighter lands and less contentious postings.
