What does your avatar mean to you?
I've seen some really interesting and original avatars on DU lately, as well as a lot of people using the same ones as each other. Sometimes I'm not sure what the images mean. So I thought I'd start a DU thread for people to explain why they picked their avatar.

I'll start--I was attracted to the tartan because of my Scottish ancestry and punk rock roots. When I realized it was Wallace tartan, that clinched it (William Wallace was Mel Gibson's role in Braveheart). It's the plaid that cries freedom.

It's a picture of me in a Robin Hood costume. It was taken the night The Prinecss and I met, at a Halloween Dance in October of 1991.

Looking at it now, though, it seems rather odd that Robin Hood has a mullet....

He's quite popular in Korea with the Hello Kitty set. One of my Korean friends has attempted to explain him to me but all I get is that he looks like a marshmallow and he's quite sarcastic. Just changed mine to make it a little more personal than the Opus avatar I was using. It's is a clip of a pic I made a couple of years ago for the IRTC - an online 3d graphics competition. It's hard to see because of the size, but it's a keyboard in a bottle - just sort of my version of the old message in a bottle thing (yes, I know I'm deranged :silly:).

Here's the entire pic (came in 2nd place, btw) if anybody is interested -

it used to be a little pink candy heart with "Get Bent" written on it. Someone pointed out to me that they thought it was sending a message about how I felt about people. They were just joking but after I thought about it I realized maybe it was too mean. Changing to the music notes was my way of trying to have something more positive. I was also a music major back in the day and it connected me back to that. :)

71. Mine is explained in my sig but I know some folks who didn't
connect the two. In case sigs aren't showing when you read this, it's Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler USMC, who was asked to be the figurehead in a plot by financiers and corporate executives to overthrow FDR because the New Deal was such a threat to their financial interests. The conspirators hadn't been aware that Butler had been touring the country giving speeches against their kind and he turned them into the FBI. No one was prosecuted. Today's fascists are more subtle (and successful) but the goals are pretty much the same: a totalitarian state to benefit an elite few at the expense of the many. Butler's story is not well known so I like to promote it.

74. THANK YOU!
Didn't put two and two together because often the sig line has nothing to do with the avatar.

84. Mine's not original, and I've considered changing.
But I have had the same avatar since I joined DU, except for the "I voted" one, back in November. Jimmy Carter is my favorite president of my lifetime. I feel that he did so much good and will be treated kindly by history, though he sure isn't now. Having him as my avatar is my one chance to support and honor him.

After he fooled all the so-called experts and pundits who wrote him off as dead in the water, winning the greatest upset victory in the history of politics, and becoming one of the greatest Presidents in US history.

87. Mine is the DU Bar of Soap.
You use it to vigorously rub off all of the Bushite filth and grime (lies and misinofrmation) that smothers you on a daily basis. It wasn't until later that I realized it more likely has to do with Fight Club -- But oh! I can't talk about that.

88. An oddball individual that defends other people's pursuit of their dreams
I share some traits with the character Luffy D Monkey (yeah thats his name). I believe that each person has their own dignity and their own unique dream. I believe they have every right in the world to pursue that dream no matter how far fetched it may seem. I will stand by them and help them achieve that dream if I am able to.

So yeah he's a big grinning dope with an odd perspective on life. So am I.

'cause I like Al. I think he's a good guy, and think the world would be much better off in so many ways if he would have been able to hold the office he was rightfully elected to in 2000.

I change mine from time to time, though, but Al's kinda my default.

102. I have a lot of respect
for Twain. He did his time in the 1890's California boom; I did my time in the 1990's one. He seemed, to me, to have moved away from party politics and gave it good to all comers.

Gee, though, now that I've thought this through, I'm think I'll change again...

Edited on Fri Mar-25-05 02:41 PM by Xithras
I've hiked nearly every trail in Yosemite, and have been to the top of Half Dome six times. On a cool summer day, there are few places in the world that are more peaceful and tranquil. When I get stressed out at work and need to envision my "happy place" to chill out, I envision that.
