Poll question: Best 'Girl Band' EVER
Edited on Thu Mar-24-05 12:09 AM by Enraged_Ape
For me, there's only one clear front-runner, but they're all good.

1. Tank ya, Ape, for including the Lennon Sisters.
Anacani's a little upset, but I explained to her that she's not a member of a girl group.

Thanks to her, I didn't have to spend alot of money on psychotherapy. And when you think that she played lead guitar and did that, it is amazing.

I have to say, that my FAVORITE SONG of all time, ever, (which for a music buff is saying alot) is "Dust Cake Boy" off of Spanking Machine.

That song...there are no words.

They did some intense stuff... really ahead of their time.

Of the poll choices, I went with the Bangles.

14. I debated putting the Shangri-Las on
But the fact that they helped give Billy Joel his start as a session pianist, this unleashing his horror upon the world and starting the chain of events that will eventually bring on the Rapture, disqualifies them from this and all future contests.

62. the Wilson sisters are a cosmic entity.
I also want to include Lunachicks, L7, Babes in Toyland, Bikini Kill
Tribe 8, 4 non-blondes too.

there are alot we never heard of

I want to include Hole despite Erik Erlandson.

And I think Polly Jean Harvey and Diamanda Galas qualify as bands because PJ plays every instrument under the sun and Diamanda uses her voice like an electric guitar, among other things.

I didn't vote, because none of my favorites are up there.

I think musically Lunachicks are the most talented, but too hardcore for most, with Tribe 8 running a close second in that category, and L7 were the best mainstream hard rock girl band.

82. hmm
never thought of it that way. I'll have to listen with a fresh ear. Although I have to say, when I listen to a lot of early punk, I can really hear those disco and 70s rhythmic influences. Even in Clash songs and later, in the Minutemen. Since I have been taking drum lessons, I notice those types of things a lot more.

67. why'd ya have to go and do that?
geez that brings back memories.

I remember the dawning of these ladies, I feel so alienated from music right now because there just doesn't seem to be anyone doing any of this stuff in the present gang, it's all R&B influenced music which isn't that creative, just mostly about sex and runs, or rap which not that many women can do well.

All these white chicks doing the R&B influenced stuff are kind of repulsive to me, just because so many black women that can sing circles around them end up having to stand behind them and sing back-up so someone like Jessica Simpson can push her tits together and suck on her finger and look stupid.

69. Runs In The Family
Runs In The Family
(Words & Music by Terre Roche)

I can't get over what I saw.
And I can't change the law of averages.
I'm going down.
My uncle did it; my daddy did it.
I'm beginning to think that it runs in the family
Oh no, runs in the family.

One by one we left home.
We went so far out there.
Everybody got scared.
My uncle did it; my daddy did it.
I'm beginning to think that it runs in the family
Oh no, runs in the family.

All the boys could have gone to school.
All the girls were pretty enough to play the fool
Something about the danger zone
Wouldn't leave the bunch of us alone.

I remember that night.
It was the one I picked a fight with you.
I'm holding the bag
Just like my mama did;
Just like her mama did.
Now there's gonna be a new kid in the family
Oh no, kid you're gonna run in the family.
Oh yeah, kid you're gonna run in the family.

Not only were they fronted by Suzi Quatro (Leather Tuscadero, for you I-only-get-my-music-from-TV-shows folks); but they brought us possibly the finest ode to alcohol abuse ever, "What a Way to Die."

You've got the kind of body
That makes me come alive,
But I'd rather have my hands across
A bottle of Colt 45.

Oh, baby, come on over.
Come on over to my side.
I may not live past 21,
But what a way to die!

. . .before them i would have said Bangles or Runaways, (post Cherrie Curie.) GoGo's just weren't really that good, although i did like "Our Lips Are Sealed" and had a thing for Janie Weidlin.

But, the Donnas rock, and there's really no pretense. It's just rock. And, they all can play some. I'd rather listen to their stuff than to garage rockers like Jet or White Stripes.
