What instrument do you play? Do you earn money with your talents, or is it all for fun?

49. It can be tough to take up as an adult
with no experience as a child. An adult's ears tend to be more sensitive to pitch and tone quality than a child's. And there's a certain degree of scratching and squawking that's bound to come out before a person figures out how to make a beautiful sound. Many adults don't have the patience to listen to themselves (or others) at their worst.

I'm sorry your sister was one of them... :D

I played guitar and a little keyboard. Lots of singing, too.

If any guitarist out there need help learning a solo or chord pattern, let me know.

43. I played the cello for 8 years
From 5th grade through high school. Once I graduated I gave it up. I wasn't going for a musical degree, and I never made time to practice/gave up my private lessons.

But, my mom bought me a beautiful cello when I was in 8th grade (worth about 10K, meager compared to "professional" instruments.) and I've kept it, because I'm going to make my children learn.

Classical music is a great appreciation that everyone should learn.

46. Hobbyist supreme
I've been playing the piano since childhood and the geeeetar since adolesence and am somewhat competent on both. Picked up the sax in my 20's after falling in love with jazz. I'm a bit out of practice, but I could probably smoke some serious ass in a Junior High School band blowing session. In the last few years I've acquired a flute and a beat up old trumpet. I can coax a few tunes out of the flute, but my trumpet-playing is so bad the wife won't let me practice when she's around.

This whole parenthood thing is such a drain on my time and lifeforce that the practicing just isn't happening enough. I figure that in 4 decades or so the pace of life will slow, I can focus more on music, and perhaps start a Grateful Dead cover band with my buddies in the nursing home.

47. Guitar - mainly for fun
When I was in my 20's (in the 1970's) I toured for about a year or more with a rock band, playing mainly cheap rooms where our agent booked us. Since then it's been just a form of relaxation. But over the last 3 years I've gone back to it pretty seriously. I've stopped using a guitar pick and I play fingerstyle jazz on a nylon string flamenco guitar. I've thought about trying to get small gigs in restaurants and lounges but there's very little demand for live music anymore (at least not like before). But since my business (I'm an immigration lawyer in a Chinese law firm) has started heading down the drain, especially since Bush came into office and immigration from the Far East has slowed, I've actually thought about giving it a try. I don't need much money to live on right now, but my cousin (who has been a serious pro guitarist all his life) is even having trouble making ends meet.

57. Dayum, that sounds like what I'm doing lately
I've become a big fan of nylon-string guitar sound in the last few years. I too have forsaken the flatpick in favor of my fingers and fingernails. My own style of late has been sort of a gypsy rumba/jazz sound, with a little Latin flavor just to keep things interesting.

Because I like to be heard over the band, I got a Godin ACS, which is a solid-body nylon string guitar (more at www.godinguitars.com). The neck is a slight bit wider than a standard electric, but the feel is totally like that of a decent flamenco guitar. Mine also has 13-pin Roland GR-compatable output, so I've also been messing with guitar synthesis, too.

PM me if you've got any recordings-- I'd like to hear how you sound!

:hi:

55. I play and write songs
I used to do it on a semi-professional basis when I was younger, but now it's mostly just for fun. My band and I put out a CD about ten years back, and had a decent local following, but I had a nervous breakdown and had to knock it off for a couple of years.

My main instrument are guitar and voice, although I also play harmonica, bass, keys, alto sax, viola, and hand percussion (bongos, congas, djembe, cajón, etc.)

Here's a drunken me playing flamenco guitar:

59. I compose, in classical style
and record my compositions with various synths. I Play piano/keyboards. Have written 3 symphonies, 2 piano concertos, many brass quintets and string quartets, lots of programatic orchestral works (Alice in Wonderland Suite, Highland Suite, Gothe Suite, ... etc.) Have done lots of composing in film-score style including score for the silent movie Metropolis, and scores for several non-existant movies.

Have never performed or composed publically or commercially. This is my private vice that I don't usually share with anyone.
