Dear god, 13 hours in the hellhole today.

Last Wednesday, it was 15. Crank out the work at a feverish pace. My assistant and I cranked out 101 ads in three days this week, many built from scratch, the rest imported into InDesign from Quark. My brain is jelly, my soul is dark. There is no more strawberry-orange-banana to mix with my rum, and the weed I bought last June is all gone. Woe is me.

You need a good drinking bar. Not a "scene", but a comfortable place where the bartender is erudite and knows how to make a world-class martini or put the perfect head on a draft beer that is always fresh when pulled from the tap. Where the other patrons are civilized and housebroken, without being anal or elitist.

The restaurant in the back serves the most amazing pan-seared Ahi tuna (sushi-grade) in Dill sauce. But they were closed for the night when I finished.

You sound like you're headed for burnout, if you're not already there. I was in advertising/marketing/copywriting and there were difficult days. 101 ads in three days sounds like a killer. Maybe you should shape up your resume and look elsewhere. I made several career changes and hopped through a bunch of jobs while I was working. Longest stint was 9 1/2 years in sales; shortest was one day (temporary work). Just my humble opinion (now retired).

I'm just letting off steam after a bad day. Yes, headed for burnout. I'm polishing my resume and getting ready to look for better things. Thanks for the good wishes. Anytime I think I've got it bad, I just look at the salespeople and thank my lucky stars. :)

The sad part is, these publishers will work someone half to death, then fire them for spite and try to deny them their last paycheck. Salt in the wound.

13. 15 hours is nothing compared to some of the hours I worked.

I used to be a typesetter for a magazine in Miami. During our monthly deadlines, we would work round the clock, usually 24 hours without sleep. And I didn't get any overtime, just comp time and would get bitched at when I did take time off. Oh, yes, and I know all about building ads from scratch.

14. Ah, a true warrior

I once worked 20 hours with the flu. Does that qualify? I'm coming up on 40, so I'm not a spring chicken anymore. Those long days are horrible.
