5. The usual spelling is hypocracy, probably confusing the spelling of
"democracy" and "plutocracy" with a different Greek suffix. I think it's the reason Bush says "nucular." He puts it in the same linguistic column with "secular" or "macular."

21. I should have said the usual misspelling is "hypocracy." If you read the
rest of my post, you'll see that I've posited an explanation for why it's usually misspelled that way. It follows a pattern of other words from different suffixes.

Actually, for your use above, IIRC, a simple ?! would be acceptable.

13. what grammatical/use error
Edited on Wed Mar-23-05 01:21 PM by datasuspect
is it specifically?

you may not like it stylistically, but style has more to do with taste rather than rules.

oh, by the way, it is considered more proper to follow acronyms with the spelled out version in parentheses (at least during the first instance of use, and mandatorily if you use the acronym only once).

17. The one that says never use more than one exclamation point.
I tried to look it up but found only one source... a teacher's page, I think. I learned some things that were incorrect, so it wouldn't shock me if this were wrong as well.

I use the ellipsis incorrectly all the time, however... so I feel you on the 'style' thing. :hi:

19. They indicate material that's missing.
I use them to indicate pauses. I used to abuse the hell out of commas. Now I do it to ellipses. :)
