What movie should I go to tonight to distract me from the Cubs game?
I will probably die if I watch the Cubs game tonight. Last night was bad enough. I was just starting to feel comfortable with the game when it all imploded. :-(

So what movie should I go see tonight with my partner?

I have no clue what good movies are out these days. I poked around a bit on the local website for showtimes and the only one that particularly interested me (Runaway Jury) doesn't seem to open until Friday.

No horror movies, but otherwise we're pretty open. Thanks for any tips!

2. Lost in Translation
Hands down the best movie I have seen in some time. Touching, yet angsty, hilarious. Bill Murray at his best, and the young lady (slips my mind) is great for the role and is so girl next door I think I am in love. Great photography.

6. Looks like a good candidate
Always have liked Bill Murray. He's a Cub fan too, so maybe that's not distracting enough. ;-)

Thanks!

18. I posted asking DUers about it last week
before I went and those who had seen it were only positive. One post suggested this could be Bill's Oscar nod...

3. Is 'Mystic River' playing in your area?
That way you can post a review. :D

Clint Eastwood directed, stars Tim Robbins and Sean Penn.

Sounds promising based on the people involved.

Thanks!

22. I'd also recommend "Mystic River"
I can't wait to see it myself. I read the Dennis Lehane book that it's based on, and the book is terrific; the story will make a great movie. The screenplay was written by the same guy that did it for "L.A. Confidential" and Lehane signed off on the job he did: he was true to the book, right down to using some of its dialogue. They filmed it here in Boston, where the book takes place. (The author is a Boston native and resident, who happens to be my cousin's brother-in-law. I'm glad he is, because I probably wouldn't have discovered what an excellent writer he is if that wasn't the case.)

Every review I've seen has been absolutely glowing; I don't think I've ever seen that for a movie. Even though I loved the book, I expect to love the movie as well. And I'll be curious to compare my reaction to that of folks who haven't read the book (since I already know the things that will be surprises to those who haven't read it, like who dun it). If you go see it, please let us know what you think--just don't include any spoilers. :-)

23. I think this is the winner
Edited on Wed Oct-15-03 03:40 PM by pmbryant
I had been leaning towards 'Once Upon a Time in Mexico'. But reading the description of that movie, it sounds like it's a sequel to an earlier movie that I haven't seen.

So 'Mystic River' it is. Plus, MR is longer and I'm going to need a long movie to keep me away from baseball as long as possible.

:eyes:

EDIT: Thanks to everyone for their suggestions!

4. Once Upon A Time In Mexico
Depp is brilliant in it, just like he's brilliant in everything else he does.

Depp's movies are great. That may push this one over the top.

Thanks!

5. Kill Bill
Its not horror, but there is gore in it. Good movie, in my opinion.

10. Action movie, huh?
That's a possibility, but I have less and less patience for gory movies these days.

Thanks for the tip!

13. Yeah, pretty much non-stop action.
Of course, the fact that it's technically 1/2 of a longer story makes the ending a bit anti-climatic, but its still a fun movie.

(btw, the gore in this movie is almost cartoon-like, there's so much of it. And even though its bloody - there's not alot of 'squeamish' type scenes)

12. I'm in San Antonio
Moved away from Chicago in 1990.

If I were still in Chicago, distracting myself from this game would be a futile effort, I believe. ;-)

Thanks!

20. whats your favorite theater?
I used to go to Huebner Oaks 24 when I could, thought it was a better view than the Regal theatres. I lived near Alamo Heights but hated that complex...

21. My favorite theater is the one closest to me
That would be Huebner Oaks or the new Regal place on DeZavala. I don't have a preference between them.

19. I watched last night and that didn't help!
The only game I've missed so far was Game 2, which I purposely didn't watch after the stressful Game 1 that the Cubs lost.

The Cubs won Game 2 in a stress-free blowout!

I'm hoping for the same result tonight.

:-)

24. I'm thinking something from Vivid Productions.......
You know, something that you rent from the back of the store.

Perhaps there's a Cub themed adult film, something like, "Let's Play Three" or "The Friendly Concubine" or "Cork My Bat".
