Apparently being fat makes me less attractive as an employee...
Even though I'm more than qualified for the crap I've been applying and interviewing for lately. God, this pisses me off.
Today, I interviewed at a place that does distribution. He asked me three questions, nothing about my qualifications, and then it was over. It took three minutes after I drove an hour. He interviewed three people for the position. The other two didn't have degrees, and neither were overweight.
UGH.

3. Awwww Duckie. I'm sorry. You wouldn't want to work for those bastards
anyway. If you can prove wrongdoing, I say go forward with a lawsuit.

6. Naw...I didn't really want the job anyway...
But it's just the fact that I was judged by my appearance instead of my abilities.

4. that sucks
I've been overweight my entire life. Nothing horribly obese, but a lot bigger than the cute ones applying for the jobs.

It is too bad they prefer looks over qualifications.

Being thin doesn't always win and, being thin doesn't get the job done either!

However, look at it this way. Who WANTS to work for someone with a mindset like this? Not me that is for sure.

Hang in there ... the right job will come your way where you are valuable for the person with the skills you possess.

5. That's such crap..I am sorry
My administrative assistant weighs over 300 lbs. She's probably the most competent, energetic person I've ever met.

7. I wish I could say I was suprised.
I hope you can find something where they don't discriminate.

Good luck.

8. How do you know it's your weight?
And I'm saying this as a person who has fleetingly wondered if I wasn't hired for a certain job because of my race.

Unlike some civil service jobs where they take the top scorers on the test, the rest of us have to deal with very subjective hiring practices. It really could be anything at all, and the entire process makes you feel like shit.

You'll get the job you were meant to have....good luck!

9. Well, considering I drove an hour and he only asked me three questions...
After he seemed interested in me once he saw my resume, I can't shake that it probably had something to do with that.
Thanks
Duckie

12. My male friend with long hair had the same problem
He's been to interviews where they sounded extrememly intersted in him over the phone and acted like they wanted to give hime the job, but seemed really not interested when he showed up in person. Unfortunately, employers can and do discriminate against people based on appearance.

11. just a thought
do you think they might have had an internal applicant (i.e. someone who already works there) that they had lined up for the job?

i know that at places like universities, the POLICY is that they have to interview a certain number of people for an open position, even if they know they are already giving the position to an internal applicant. it's a really shitty way to waste people's time, but it does happen.

good luck on future applications. i hate the whole interviewing process myself; luckily, i haven't had to do it in a while.

13. THIS really happens, and it's a real disgrace-
When I was being interviewed for a job at a university, I had great luck over the phone, but was asked only a few questions in person. My father told me later that sometimes they have to fill a quota of interviews even if they have someone already lined up.

14. exactly
that is exactly what i've witnessed. i worked for a public library many years back, and even though they knew an internal applicant was getting hired for an open position, they had to interview at least two outside applicants. i felt really bad for the people who had to come in and waste their time interviewing for a job that there was no chance that they would get.

16. The smartest, dearest, wisest, kindest gentlest woman I know was passed
over for a good job because she is morbidly obese. It broke my heart... but to see her sit at meetings eating a gallon of ice cream broke my heart even more. Her food addiction has complete control over her...
