5. It's when you sneak up on a cow that's asleep (standing up)
& push it over.

7. Glad you asked!

Cow tipping is where you get a bunch of folks together and find a field. Then you find a cow, preferably a drowsy one. Then you get some teamwork and try to topple the animal over. Then you run like hell.

Seriously. Do a web search on it. People out in the sticks really do this. It's especially popular at rural and ag colleges.

Why do people always think it is fun to torment animals?

4. I believe so....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cow_tipping

Evidence that cow tipping is an urban myth
There is no evidence aside from (mostly unreliable) eyewitness reports that any cows have ever been tipped in this manner. In addition, there are a number of problems with typical accounts of cow tipping. Unlike horses, cows do not 'lock their legs' when they sleep. Most of their sleep is very light and easily disturbed - typical of herd prey animals. They take short naps at regular intervals throughout a 24 hour period, which means that at any given time, some members of the herd are aware and alert. The vision field of a cow is larger than that of a human, and they have acute senses of hearing and smell. Cows are not easy to sneak up on, and quickly communicate to the rest of the herd that something is amiss.

Cows are large, and would be a challenge even for several people to tip over. A grown cow can be over 5 feet high with a mass of on the order of 700 kg (1,500 pounds) and sometimes reaching 900kg. By way of comparison, a typical sumo wrestler masses only 140 kg (310 lb). The four corners of a large "American-style" domestic refrigerator fairly closely approximate the spread of a cow's legs. If the refrigerator were cut down to five feet, filled with 400kg of lead weights, and placed in a muddy field, tipping it would offer a comparable challenge to tipping a cow.

Many variants of the legend claim that successfully tipping a cow will result in the cow's death. Although cows can die if prevented from sitting upright for an extended period of time, simply forcing a cow onto its back for a short period of time will not cause death. Under typical circumstances cows are capable of restoring themselves to an upright position

10. definitely a myth
when i was younger and much, much more irresponsible, my friends and i tried this numerous times. it doesn't work because at least one of the cows are always up, and they moo as soon as you get near the others. out of exasperation, one of my friends in college (a 6'4, 245lb rubgy player) ran full speed at a cow that was trotting along, and ended up bouncing off of it while the cow's path of motion did not change at all. impossible i tell you!

13. LOL amateurs
The fact that it isn't easy is what makes it fun. Sometimes you end up doing it, but you're just as likely to all end up running from a farmer with a shotgun and covered in cow manure.

19. Just because you don't tip the cow over
doesn't meen you haven't been cow tipping. And most people don't do it unless they're drunk.

17. Yeah, I used to work at a dairy farm
Cows are HUGE. And bad-ass. You can't f*ck with them like that.

I used to f*ck with them in other ways, though. I would have to go out to bring them in for milking at 5 am, and most of them would be lying down and I had to make them all get up and walk to the barn.

So I would sing James Brown's Sex Machine --Get Up, Get on Up!, and so on and so forth. I convinced myself that they liked it, and it worked! :P

23. Ahhhh...but you tried it, therefore it isn't a myth.......
And in my younger and more irresponsible days, I tried it, too. There's nothing like getting a bunch of drunk college students out in a muddy field to wallow around in cow shit, chasing cows around at 1:00 in the morning, trying to tip them over.

In retrospect, it was damn dangerous, because as others have mentioned, cows are effin' HUGE, and they get really pissed off if you screw with them.

Has anyone ever really been successful at tipping a cow? Unknown, but facts is facts. We went cow tipping.

That's the problem with University studies. Stuff that sounds good on paper doesn't always match up with the reality of personal experience.

I defy anyone here to sneak up on a cow and tip it over! First of all, the damn thing would wake up long before you got to it - cows are a domestic version of a prey animal - they wouldn't have gotten to this point in evolution if they slept so soundly that a noisy human could tip them over without them knowing it!

Second, cows weigh in excess of a thousand pounds on average - what he-man is going to be able to just knock it over?

City slickers - they'll believe anything.

edited for clarity

Collecting those fungi that grow in/around their poop.

The only person I know who attempted to tip a cow ended up in the hospital. He forgot there was a bull in the pasture.

30. I had a friend when I was in college,
in Mt. Pleasant , Mich. He'd grown up in that farming area. He told me that their idea of a good time was to take a sling shot out and shoot at the scrotum of the bull. I didn't find it very funny, and he seemed ashamed of it at the time. He died in 1980 of testicular cancer. I named my son after him.
