1. One Dem speaking out on it
Edited on Mon Mar-21-05 09:28 PM by mcscajun
from the article:

"People have just gotten fed up with the traffic concerns and are worried about quality of life issues with oversized stores," said Loretta Weinberg, a Democrat of Teaneck, who co-sponsored similar legislation in the General Assembly.

Moreover, Ms. Weinberg said she was well aware that the bills included language aimed directly at Wal-Mart, which would make it easier for other traditional big-box stores like Home Depot and Costco to come in, primarily because those businesses treat employees more equitably.

"The kind of employer Wal-Mart is, well, it's a corporation that is not doing a lot to help the quality of life for the people I represent," she said. "In general, they pay low wages, give very few benefits and no health coverage. So they contribute to the cost of society in general. If someone doesn't have health coverage, they have to go to an emergency room for a cold, and we all pay for that."

7. and that will accomplish what?
It would kind of hurt the customer base if you have 2 Wal-Marts right next to each other

10. I'm so happy that suburban sprawl is now encroaching even Calvert
county.

Man, haven't they raped AA County enough? Does Calvert County need their own Glen Burnie?

3. Those f*ckwads want to build a second supercenter in my town
which only has 35,000 people in it. And it would located about two blocks from my house, aarrgh! Fortunately some of the people who own land they need for it won't budge, so I think we're safe.

11. That's always their plan - open several stores in an area
put all the little mom and pop stores out of business, then close all the stores they really don't want but just put there to drive everyone else broke.

14. I'm going to a walmart protest tomorrow...
http://pittsfieldfirst.org/

They're trying to put on in this little town, right in the middle of three schools at an already dangerous intersection, with another Wal-Mart less than 10 minutes away! and that was driving through the snow!

www.reformwalmart.org has an email list and lots of random articles and stuff.

I think the problem isn't so much that people aren't taking action, it's that they never link up with any other groups and the enthusiasm dies out once the Wal-Mart is either beat or moves in.

9. There's going to be seven in Chattanooga, TN once they're finished..
There are already three huge supercenters within a 7 mile radius of each other with three more in the metro area. Wal Mart is trying to put Winn Dixie, Food Lion, and Bi Lo out of business in the Chattanooga area and are enabled by the city government giving them tax breaks.
