7. Yes...
and do you notice that 3 New England states are in the top 10,with Conn and Maine in the very decent spots of 11 nd 16? So..perhaps the conclusion is that New England is the most livable REGION?:)

8. seems to be an anti-black bias to me?
Maybe I'm just being over sensitive but c'mon. Minnesota? Liveable? I thought it was famous for being colder than Alaska. Iowa? What do they have other than farms and writers -- which is, come to think of it, the same things we find in no. 50 ranked Mississippi, except, of course, that Mississippi's writers might be considered a little better?

And, since Tennessee and North Carolina are so poorly ranked, could all you "others" PLEASE stop moving there? For that matter, if you could stop moving to southern Louisiana and tying up the traffic, it would be much appreciated here also. Thank you.

And what the hell is wrong with Arkansas and Arizona, for pete's sake? People save up all year to visit those places. How many dream of visiting Iowa and Minnesota?

i just wonder where the designers of this ranking happen to own investment property in a retirement community, ha ha, looks like they couldn't afford arizona or the mountains, they couldn't afford that condo on st. charles avenue either

24. This poll has no soul.
The 43 factors slant heavily toward the material world of the easily quantifiable. I guess these lists have to have somebody at the bottom, and while we used to fight it out with Arkansas and South Carolina for the booby prize, they seem to be taking flight, leaving us to duke it out with Louisiana and Alabama. Guess its an SEC thing. :)

-

What threatens us today is fear. Not the atom bomb, nor even fear of it because if the bomb fell on Oxford tonight, all it could do would be to kill us which is nothing, since in doing that it will have robbed itself of its only power over us. Our danger is the forces in the world today which are trying to use man's fear to rob him of his individuality, his soul, trying to reduce him to an unthinking mass of fear and bribery.

--William Faulkner, commencement speech at his daughter's high-school graduation, 1951

10. Virginia's #5
and it would be more accurate to say that the scale runs northeast to southwest. Place I would think more livable than Virginia, including Hawaii, New Mexico, and Arizona, rank far lower.

18. Hawaii's quite expensive
I lived there for a few years in the late 90s. Housing and food are quite expensive there and that cuts down on the "livability" factor, I'm sure.

For me, the lack of seasons also cut down on its livability. I need seasons! ;-)

14. I Know... Pesky Little Technicality There... It's Still A Valid PLACE...
... that's left out of so many rankings like this. I wish more "best/worst" studies would include DC more often. Perhaps if the powers that be has some HARD FACTS and comparisions and statistics about the state of the distric (and the perception folks have) they might be more inclined to DO SOMETHING to improve the area.

That's all. It's frustrating to live here and see all the things that are in disrepair and falling apart. Don't get me started on the crime. It's EMBARRASSING for the nation's capital to look this way. Sigh.

Are (D) States more liveable than (R) States in General?

(I see WA is a mediocre 23 or so)

It's kind of a puzzle, isn't it? Then, again, what other state would elect a guy like Wellstone for two terms and probably a third?

15. Minnesota won't be #1 for much longer....
Are Democratic party has been in retreat for far too long. The good things about Minnesota are being siphoned away by pukes like Pawlenty and Coleman.

Our education system was once a model for the rest of the nation and now it lies in shambles. Even rich suburban school districts are falling apart because no one will vote to raise property taxes, despite the fact that nothing else will properly fund the schools.

And thats just symptomatic of our problems.

16. Iowa #2 in the ranking for several reasons
Amazona - Have you ever been to Iowa? What's with the criticism ... just because we are #2 you have to claim we have nothing here? We have a terrific educational system, beautiful land, plenty of 4 season recreation, safe streets, friendly people, high wages and a low cost of living. Our economy is doing great and we are growing in all areas of the state. We have a grow Iowa fund for new business and a Vision Iowa plan to construct public facilities across the state and in small towns. That, while most other states are building debt and raising taxes. All adds up to a good ranking to me.
