"The Devils Playground"
Has anyone else seen this? Very interesting documentary on a little known facet of Amish life, when the children reach the age of 16, they are pretty much cut loose to live life like everyone else so they can decide if they really want to dedicate their lives to the church or not.

Very interesting stuff, especially when you see how open their reverend is about answering questions and so forth (despite their usual unwillingness to be photographed).

I'm really enjoying the film.

1. That's a superb documentary.
That one kid who got involved in drugs - MAN I pity that poor f-up. You say you're "enjoying the film" so I'll assume you're not to the end yet and refrain from spoiling anything, but his story is one of the film's more compelling.

5. Yeah, and even though they don't follow it up, I have an odd feeling
he turned out okay. I just got the feeling that the new girl he was with and the move put him in a position where he'd turn out alright.

3. haven't seen it - but what a powerful idea
let the youth experience, learn, and decide what they embrace. I will look for the film.

4. I've seen it. It's a great film.
The Amish let their kids live amongst the white people to get a taste of that kind of life. Some go back to the settlement, some don't.

6. I'm not sure "white people" is the right term :)
Since the Amish are predominantly white. They refer to us as "English" and I can deal with that. :)

7. I grew up near an Old Order Amish settlement.
I never heard the term English. It was the white man and the Amish man. Just my experience anyway.

8. I'm going by what the Amish reverend in the film called us :)
It may vary by community/settlement though.
