1. I'm interested Tandalayo, but very non-tech
can you give a cliff note version of how it works to record?

How would you record/track the voice and guitar?

2. I'm with you on that

All I want is a simple "virtual" 8 track recorder, something simple. I don't want to have to read a technical manual a mile thick just to make a simple recording of some music I wrote. I loved Cool Edit when it first came out, but then by the time they got to Coo Edit Pro which offered 64 tracks and seemed great, they had upped the price and made it hard to operate. Then I couldn't afford the full version and got tired of waiting for the "final" version. I miss the good ol' days of computer software in that respect. They used to get the final version ready instead of MAKING you upgrade and then cutting off tech support for older versions. Of course, back then, they didn't have old versions yet.

4. With everything...
There is a learning curve. Sad to say, in some cases.

Lots of power there for a small price. A rather modest PC with a large set of hard drives would cover the action.

That is some very affordable technology. With a good MTech soundcard, you would have quite a studio.

3. That's a GREAT price!
I don't know anything about that technical stuff, but I want to buy it just because it's so cheap for that list of stuff...that should mean something to me...

5. This isn't a mere application, it's a dedicated distribution of LINUX
Good news for you "non geeks" is that it's a Live CD, so you could run it on a Windows PC without changing the existing software - just boot from the CD.

Alternatively, you should be able to install the contained LINUX operating system directly onto the hard drive, if you wanted to dedicate a PC just for use as a studio, if you wanted to do so.

I'm not a musician, so I'm not familiar with most of the apps listed. Audacity is like Cool Edit Pro "Lite" and K3B is the best CD burner available for Linux (Yes there finally IS a Nero for Linux, but it SUCKS) And of course, XMMS is a LINUX media player very similar to WinAmp.

The price of the CD is great, compared to an equivalent setup on a Windows or MAC, but the truth is that most, if not all, of the LINUX apps listed are either included in decent distributions or available for download from the software repositories accessible by distros such as Debian, Fedora, or SUSE. Obviously, your comfort level with Linux comes into play there, but there would probably be some configuration neccessary even with the Live CD.
