That's HIS ball, after all this.
And if the Cubs lose tonight, that ball's gonna be as infamous as the Hope Diamond. EBay's gonna have a curse of it's own.

2. Give it a rest.
It happened.

It can't be changed.

Time to move on to game seven.

Kerry Wood is on the mound.

So you gotta like the Cubs chances.

Especially since it's their third (and last).

5. That Fan Kept Sitting There
Edited on Tue Oct-14-03 10:45 PM by Don_G
Because Cubs Security initially grabbed the guy that retrieved the ball. Other fans pointed out the error, Security got the right guy and he's still sitting in the Office waiting for a sneak out of Wrigley Field to safety.

If he's not from out of town, he'd better be and soon.

6. Chicago Tribune's coverage
"It has nothing to do with the curse," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. "It has to do with fan interference and a very uncharacteristic error by Gonzalez. History has nothing to do with this game, nothing."

To add to the hurt, the fan who blocked Alou's path on Luis Castillo's ball was wearing a Cubs hat. Once the rally got in full swing, fans around the man, who looked to be in his early 20s, starting hurling beers in his direction and he was escorted out by security with a jacket over his face.

"You cost us the World Series!" one fan yelled at him.

Some people in Chicago know who this guy is, where he lives, and where he works. Tomorrow the radio audience will get to know this as well. He better take the day off from work!

12. My God
Some of you actually sound like you hope this poor guy "gets what he has coming to him" I know it's baseball. I'm a fan, too, and know how much it sucks when your team comes so close and blows it. But, number one, get some perspective, here. The guy caught a ball at a baseball game, something fans do all the time. He saw the ball coming and probably didn't even notice the player. Number two, the Cubs blew it all by themselves. They had an error and walked a batter right after it happened. I know, momentum, blah blah blah. These players are professional. If something like that affects them so much, then they don't deserve to go to the world series.

15. Exactly right

Be as mad as you want at the guy. The ball was in the stands.

I GUARANTEE all the people on this board screaming for his death would have done the same thing in the same situation.

If you look at it, THREE fans were reaching for the ball. He just happened to be the one who tipped it.

Think of it. The guy was looking at the ball the whole way - he couldn't even see Alou comming, until it was too late.

If you want to blame somebody, blame the shortstop, Gonzales. His error is why they lost.

19. You guarentee it?
Wrong - most people who know baseball would get the hell out of the way and let their home team outfielder catch it.

And, like it or not, that completely shifted the mood of the game. All of a sudden, the Cubs just lost their stride, and you can trace it back to that point.

And it was that dude's hands who were closest, and stopped the ball from going into the glove. Watch the replay again.

18. Yep
Winners don't whine when they lose. They don't pin a whole game on one play. And they don't make excuses.

Screw the curses and history. I still like the Cubs chances tomorrow. And if they lose, they gave us Cub fans one hell of a ride this year.

As far as that fan goes, his picture will be in the paper, his name will be known by everyone in Chicago and he will face a ton of abuse for a reflex reaction at a ball game. I find the whole thing very sad.

I would be more concerned about the bad karma the hatred of that fan will bring down on the Cubs.

16. He wasn't the only one going for the ball
There was at least one other guy reaching for it. But what were they thinking? If they are Cubs fans, they should have been leaning back to give the player some room. What would they rather have, a souvenir baseball or a Cubs trip to the series?

Still, the Cubs self-destructed in that inning, and the fan had nothing to do with that.

I don't know why the mod makes me repost this on a thread that was started last night, a thread that the mod started and keeps bumping to the front page, but here it is again. Must be some sort of fetish!

BTW, CNN just said that the fan is a Little League coach.

Pop-foul fan draws hostility —and sympathy
Escorted away for protection
By Chris Malcolm and Melissa Isaacson
Tribune staff reporters

October 14, 2003, 11:47 PM CDT

Last seen, the fan who tried to catch the ball was wearing a jacket on his head and being led into the underbelly of Wrigley Field for his own protection.

He may forever be referred to as "that fan" or any number of other names after he reached for a pop foul that Cubs left fielder Moises Alou was about to catch for the second out in the eighth inning of Game 6 of the National League Championship Series, with the Cubs leading 3-0 and five outs away from the World Series.

But the ball struck the fan's hand and bounced free, opening the door to an eight-run Marlins rally and an eventual Cubs loss.

Within moments, the fans down the left-field line began booing and chanting, "Get him out." The object of their scorn still sat in his front-row seat, wearing headphones and a Cubs cap, as the Marlins began to pile up runs.

"It cost us the game, pal," shouted one fan. Another fan tossed a beer cup toward the man's seat, but it fell short.

What a dweeb! No, he's not the fan who touched the ball. He is a fan who went to give the ball toucher a "piece of his mind" and refused to sit down when asked by Cubs security.

Sorry to name names. But drunken dorks who actually want their names in the paper regarding such behavior probably don't mind.

This story also offers the perspective of the firefighter sitting next to the ball toucher. I think it shows that not all Cubs fans were goofy out of their head about it.

The 2003 13 Year Old RENEGADES

Coaches: Steve Brown, Steve Bartman

Now that the mystery of Steve Bartman's identity has been solved, I hope we can accept this as an unfortunate and unlucky incident, and go on with tonight's game.

The fact that Bartman is described as a long-time Cubs fan makes me feel truly sorry for what happened to him. No matter what happens with the Cubs tonight, Bartman's face and name are now part of baseball history. The last thing we should wish on anyone is that they become an unwilling celebrity.

Sorry Stevie, but it seems destiny has you as the goat!

42. The *REAL* explanation for the Cubs loss last night
SALEM, MA - Local spiritual authorities have confirmed that during the seventh inning stretch of the Cubs - Marlins game last night, an appearance above Wrigley Field was made by what can only be described as a Demon Billy Goat from Hell (aka DBGfH).

The DBGfH circled high above the field throughout the bottom half of the seventh. After the first out in the top of the eighth, the DBGfH seemed to hover over Left Field.

When a pop fly was obviously going out of play and Moises Alou was preparing to jump for the ball, the DBGfH entered the body of an as yet unidentified Cubs fan. The possessed fan moved his hand into the way of Alou's glove, blocking any chance for a catch and an easy out.

"I could see the evil black aura enter that poor man," said one spiritually aware Cubs fan. "It was like everything was going to become VERY VERY black. It could only be a Demon Billy Goat from Hell!"

That was not the end of the DBGfH's reign of terror on Cubs fans. It could be seen by those with spiritual awareness that the DBGfH was interfering with the game all over the field, helping Marlins batters, and at one point possessing the body of Alex Gonzales, the Cubs Shortstop, causing an error which may well have cost the Cubs the game.

Officials are working on methods to keep the DBGfH from making a reappearance in the crucial seventh game of the NLCS.

Homeland Security officials were investigating this as a possible terrorist event until a phone call was made from the governor's mansion of Florida to the White House, after which all investigations of the supernatural event were closed.
