I propose a DU Scottish Group.
Edited on Wed Mar-16-05 05:16 PM by Wat_Tyler
Open to anyone, regardless of Scots descent, of course.
Here's a preliminary mission statement - just to get the ideas going.

Mission Statement
The Scottish Group aims to cover three main areas of focus.
1- discussion of all things relating to Scots and their impact on the wider world.

2- Attempting to change the cultural stereotype of 'kilted pipers and shortbread tins' through focus on post-war Scottish popular culture - the books of Iain Banks, Irvine Welsh, William MacIlvanney, Alasdair Gray et al, the renaissance of Scottish popular music from Postcard and Creation Records through Primal Scream and the Slam DJs to the Beta Band and Franz Ferdinand, and the careers of Scottish actors and directors such as Ewan McGregor, Robert Carlyle, Dougray Scott, Danny Boyle and others.

3- The attempts of small cultural units within larger nations to retain a distinct identity in reference to Scotland's recent moves towards autonomy (covering Quebec, Catalunya, Galicia, the German Lander and so on).

4- I'm being blackmailed by someone who wants the Rezillos in the mission statement. Blackmail was invented by the Scots, you know.

Anglophobia and sectarianism will be strongly discouraged.

Any interest out there?

1. I'm in
Even though I think my clan betrayed Scotland to the English, and therefore we are banned from the kilt parade.

My ancestors were Camerons and Hays. I believe the Grays and Hays were locked in the 'Rhyme Wars' for several centuries.

54. HEY-- I'm border-country Scots, ye git!
Clan Armstrong to be exact. We're the ones who raided the English border towns and wreaked havoc across the English North.

We were so hated that they deported us to Ulster, where we proceeded to carry on as we did in the old country, annoying the crap out of Irishman, Scotsman, and Englishman alike.

Then THEY got sick of us, and deported us to the Americas-- the Appalachians mostly. There, we carried on, as before, annoying the crap out of EVERY living thing.

Thankfully, they left us to our own devices, like bootlegging, bluegrass music and cousin-marrying.

Now take that back before I haff te keck yer bum back up the hill!!!

:hi:

I don't personally wish to take it that far, but I would definitely participate in your group.

Also, I heard that a Cocteaus reunion may not be entirely out of the question. I guess it all depends on whether Liz, Robin and Simon can drop their respective projects.
