What part of your heritage to you relate to the most?
I'm Italian, Irish and Norwegian on my mom's side. On my dad's side I'm English and German.

I feel mostly English and Italian - English on the outside, but with an Italian core.

2. English Swedish, German, with a little bit of everything else
Always "felt" more English (Father's side - last name and all), but always wanted to be all Swedish. My older brother on the other hand, always identified with our German heritage (no, he wasn't a skinhead or a nazi).

12. Wow, that's cool!
My grandfather traced an early ancestor back to a small church in a small town in Sweden, in the 18th century. I don't have a clue about the rest of 'em, as most of them were broke, drunk deadbeats of some sort, who got kicked out of every decent, law-abiding country in Europe.

9. Wow, not many 100%ers in this country
I myself am a hodgepodge of stuff: English, Scottish, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, German, Czech and Slovak-- the largest %age being 25% Czech.

Also, my great-grandfather was illegitimate, so there's something else back there I have no idea about. With my luck it's probably Martian or something. :dunce:

8. I'm Irish, English, Scottish, Welsh and 1/8 Cherokee
I relate most to the Irish and English sides. My husband (who's Pakistani and believes in the patrilineal side of things) denounces my English side and says, "No - your father's people were Irish (although his mother's side was English) - so you're Irish!" We took a tour of Britain and Ireland in 2001, and I remember feeling such peace as we reached the Scottish border. It was a foggy, misty day on the moors with lots of sheep on the hillsides, and I felt I was exactly where I needed to be at that moment. Maybe I lived there in a former life!

I'm mostly Norwegian with a little bits of German, Irish and English. It would break my poor Norse grandmother's heart, but I relate more to the Irish side of me than anything else.

my Dad's side is Portugese and irish. I lean portugese. Closest generation straight from portugal is my great grandparents. Dark hair, eyes and olive skin tone (at least when I see the sun, right now, I'm pretty pale)My Father's side the women are all tiny, and thats how I am too. My mom's side is short, but there is nothing tiny going on there. Food/wine tastes are portugese. I love sailing!!!

Edited on Wed Mar-16-05 04:34 PM by progmom
My mom was born there, and I lived there as a teen for a few years. My grandfather is a Knight of the House of Orange (he was actually knighted by the Queen!) - he was very active in the underground resistance during WW2.

I am very proud of my Dutch heritage.

16. I'm of German and Hungarian ancestry....
Bots sets of grandparents came from the "old countries". I feel close to both, but I have been immersed lately in discovery about my Hungarian heritage. I have cousins in France who contacted me a few years ago to try and find out more about their relatives who settled in the US. Their father got kicked out of Hungary in the 1950's as a political dissident and settled in Strasbourg. We've been corresponding for a while now. We hope to visit them in a year or two. They have offered to take us to Hungary for a visit to see the ancestral grounds. Apparently we still have a few branches of the family tree over there. Fascinating stuff. Well, to me at least.

29. I'm a mix of everything
And my maternal grandpa is 100% Cajun. So I'm only a quarter, but it must be dominant, because I identify with it the most. But then all my maternal side of the family lives in southeast Texas, on the border to Louisiana, the Cajun runs deep.

27. At the risk of being flamed mercilessly, I will answer your question.
I am a mix of German, Russian, Polish, Irish and Scots. My name is purely Germanic.

But the only thing I well and truly identify with is the heritage I claim from my white trash forbears. By calling my family white trash I mean that I come from folks who were* mostly dirt poor and unlikely to try to bootstrap it (for many valid reasons); apparently content to live in the chaos of unpaid bills, jumping the rent, wondering if the welfare will come in on time, etc.; eating and feeding their children the cheapest and worst foods; making liquor and cigarettes priority over their children's needs.

I finally, by the grace of Whatever, did manage to bootstrap it out. So did my sisters. But DAMN, I still enjoy a good meal of tuna gravy & rice!

* re-read underlined portion carefully before you attack

30. Good for you Bertha.
I recognized a good person from your photo with your Grandmother....

I feel I have lived many lifetimes on this planet... I am sure you have too....keep up the great work.

We all progress slowly..... one lifetime after another. If you haven't come to understand this human phenomenon... it really doesn't matter.

You have lived your life as you should. Non judgemental and doing the best you can with what you understand. That is all we can do.

I am happy to have met you ... even if it has been online and within a forum of over 66,000 people...

:-)..

grandparents were Jewish immigrants from the Ukraine.

The rogue German/Irish blonde didn't stand a chance in my gene pool. I'm swarthy, with curly hair and a prominent nose, and I argue well, and I'm morose. (Although sometimes I have the blarney.)
