Does anyone read the Wall Street Journal daily?
I've heard that doing this is the equivalent of having an MBA.
I'm trying to brush up on my business world skills because I'm going to be doing a lot of writing for a business magazine, but I never took any business courses in college.

1. besides who got what promotion where, it is a RW rag.
Lots of biz profiles, stock indexes. No real substance beyond that, IMO and I read it often (to keep track of movements of players in industry).

3. we were given a subscription ...
the WSJ surprised the shit out of me last fall when they CRUCIFIED Bush's war policy, and the reasons for going to war.

Non-political articles are often very good. I like the technology columnist, some of the arts reviewers are good.

It might be good for your business writing to compare how articles are written, but buy a book like "MBA for Dummies" and read that, which will give you enough of the basics to write from the perspective they are looking for.

it is a good Return On Investment, and a lot cheaper than business school.

5. I didn't know they had MBA for Dummies, but I shouldn't be surprised
they have those books for almost everything.
Somebody recommended I buy the "Encyclopedia of American Business" by
Davis Folsom, but that sells for $95 new and $89 on Amazon.

7. I don't know that one ....
you'll mostly be concerned with corporate structure and governance and sales and markting issues. A basic economics theory book is good, too.

I have a shelf full of books from my MBA, but most are irrelevant to what you will be doing.

4. i scan it at work every day,
but i don't read the whole damn thing every day. sounds like since you will be doing a lot of writing for a business mag, that it won't hurt to read it.

6. I just subscribed to its online edition
I just finished a 1500-word article for a business magazine about a local IT firm, and it kicked my ass. It took hours of research before it finally clicked in my head and I could write about it.

11. "Know Thine Enemy"
When I worked in the corporate world I'd read it every day. My boss had a subscription so I'd swipe it from her desk to get the market news and views.

Now, I work for the gubmint, so I don't have as much use for it as far as work goes. However, I do like to check their John Birch Society-esque editorial pages, just to keep an eye on the intellectual right-wingers of the country.
