If you don't buy GM cars with On Star, you don't love your children.
Has anyone else seen these commercials? I believe it starts with kids asking things like "Would you put me in a car without seatbelts?" "Would you put my little brother in a car withot his car seat?" "Would you put me in a car with out airbags?" "Would you put me in a car without OnStar? I wouldn't" "On Star is the next big step in safety. By the time I'm in college people will wonder how they did without it." "Someone had to take the step: On Star Did."

A new low...guilting parents into buying cars.

2. Counter-ad: You don't love your kids when you buy GM SUVs
Because you're helping to destroy the planet your children will inherit from you.

21. That and
your putting them at risk in roll over crashes. Several GM SUVs did especially poorly in a recent test by some insurance group.

3. I guess they didn't get enough people buying the On Start
with stupid commercials like .... "I've locked my keys in the car and my baby is in the back seat."

I wouldn't call On Star I'd call them a dumb ass.

11. Locking keys in car...
Some cars, like newer VW's, make it almost impossible to lock your keys in

13. If I leave mine in the ignition
the car will not start.

But if I take them out of the ignition, put them on the dash or the seat next to me, and forget them there... I'm screwed.

6. more fearmongering--
WMD's, terror alerts, anthrax, bird flu,flu vaccine, y2k, etc. Fortunately for business people are scared and stupid enough to buy this shit. Now it's no longer safe to drive without a system that can track your every move and unlock your door if your to stupid to hide a key under the bumper.

7. Such bull crap by GM
OnStar is the linking of cell phone/satellite phone technology to GPSS and the "Automotive Data Bus" (that runs the "Check Engine Light" and the "Keyless Entry").

The European luxury cars have had it for years.

You may want to check http://www.sirf.com/ to see how it works without the GM bull. Also, the Japanese outfit that makes Yaesu radios also OEMs a GPSS capable satellite phone for other companies.

You can get competing systems available now - as a dealer installed after market item through a satellite phone provider.

15. The cool thing about Onstar
Edited on Wed Mar-16-05 03:37 PM by kwassa
is that it has, essentially, a satellite phone built into it. It works great in remote areas that have no cell phone reception. It can be voice-programmed, too, so it is totally hands free, as there is no keypad and is entirely voice-activated. This is aside from all the rescue features which we actually used when we locked our keys in the car once.

My car also came with XM Satellite radio, which is wonderful for the same reason, reception anywhere, hundreds of specialty channels with no commercials.

and remote-start, so the car can be pre-warmed or cooled, depending on the weather ...

(first new car in 13 years, and I'm appreciating the new toys).

17. But -
It is not exclusive to GM. It is available as an after market, dealer installed accessory - saw a brochure at my Toyota dealer.

The point is - you do not have to buy a GM car to get OnStar.

19. my last car was GM and a Toyota
the late great Geo Prizm, a disguised Toyota Corolla, of course. Damn good car, actually.

The line is fuzzier than it has ever been, with cars or parts of cars getting manufactured all over the globe, for all car makers.

On Star is independent, of course, and frankly, we don't use it much, because we spend almost all our time in major urban areas.

I am simply pointing out that OnStar has some useful features that we like.

9. American-made bullshit propaganda.
Edited on Wed Mar-16-05 01:49 PM by Vash the Stampede
Ford, GM, etc... those aren't the only American-made cars you can buy.

In fact, most of your Toyotas are American made. The only difference is that the people getting rich from your purchase don't live in America. Like I give a damn about that part. I only care about the jobs made here in the United States.

I bought a Mitsubishi Eclipse and am proud to say it was built by Americans.

12. Sure
I know my car was made in Ohio.

And in actuality, the one "American" car I bought was made in Mexico, which may have been why it was such a lousy car. Let's face it, after 4 years, a car should not be looking for its THIRD engine.

14. Yep, I hear ya.
It just pisses me off because I know the American owned companies abuse the sentiment that people should buy "Amuriken".

Explorer was built in Mexico. But they made sure to "buy American." :eyes:

22. You don't love your kids or the entire planet when you buy a Hummer
Onstar is all well and good, but until they put it in Hondas, Subarus and Toyotas I'm not going to be getting it.
