I have one month until they fire me
Found out yesterday. They'll keep me on the payroll for one month while I look for another job. i guess it's better than the alternative.

9. Heck yes!
I'm there the day after my last day. It's one of the most humbling experiences--getting in line with the rest of the laid off workers.

I've been there before. But it's when you're in line that you realized how screwed you are. Love your avatar, BTW.

21. heh, thanks
and believe me, i understand not having a job. i had two shitty jobs over last summer (the shit noone else wanted), and havn't had one since (partially bc of school, partially bc there is NO job market around here.)

havne't had occasion to stand in an unemployment line, although the way the economy's looking, i wouldn't say it's impossible. i think if you try your hardest, that's all you can do. that's what unemployment is there for, i suppose. be thankful bush hasn't taken aim at that yet.

10. Been there on this one!
Take full advantage of the offer. They let me take time off to go to interviews etc, and because I was on salary, I still got my pay. Send resumes to as many places as you can think of, call all your contacts and tell them you are looking, check the want ads everyday! Even check the business pages for businesses that might be moving to your area and send them a resume. They always hire some people at the new location.

Ask your boss for a letter of recomendation, and make sure they won't be undermining your efforts when a potential emoployer calls them.

Make sure you don't show any anger while you are interviewing with a new employer...someday that ex-employer could be them!

Make looking for a new job, your current most important task.

Good Luck to you!!!

14. That's better than where I work!
My company is laying people off. A friend of mine was on maternity leave, came back the first week of February, and was laid off the first week of March. We found out later that the CEO had wanted to lay her off as soon as she got back from maternity leave (is that even legal?) but my manager "begged" for another month. But did she warn my friend? NOPE! For an entire month my friend could've been looking for work and making new daycare arrangements but my manager was too scared or something. Believe me, my friend would not have done anything and if asked to keep it a secret she totally would have. My manager told the rest of us this in an effort to make herself look better but it made us all even more pissed off. To add insult to injury, they wouldn't even extend her insurance coverage until Cobra kicked in, so she is uninsured with a brand-new baby.

I should also point out that my company is not in dire financial straits. We're actually quite profitable. But there was a bad sales forecast on one product that my department doesn't even make and GOD FORBID the CEO not be able to turn the phenomenal profits he usually does. For that he's willing to risk ruining his employees finacially. Cool, huh?

Anyway, no matter how it happens, losing your job sucks bif. I'm sorry it's happening to you. I hope you find something even better. Good luck.

17. That sucks
But it seems that the job market is a little better than it was a couple years ago-- at least I hope it is for your sake.

Sending good karma your way (in an unmarked package, of course) :D

18. Time to get your book together
Sniff around for freelance. Check local design places and internet shops--you won't get the day rate you want but at least it's money coming in. Might consider putting your portfolio up at portfolio.com--I don't use it, but some friends have gotten work through it. Good luck.
