I wuz ROBBED!
Edited on Wed Mar-16-05 11:22 AM by SOteric
..or more correctly burgled I guess.

On Monday afternoon I returned home from work to find that poopyhead or poopyheads unknown had entered my apartment without my permission, scared the Friskies out of my kitty (who's still a little jumpy, but getting better) and taken a bunch of my more valuable crap. Including my computer.

I thank the appropriate diety that I'm just sufficiently fortunate to be able to replace my computer. I'm insured so, after a bit of time, I assume the insurance company will cough up an inadequately sized check to help compensate me for some of my loss.

I've had new locks put on my doors and I've installed a security system.

The lessons I'd like you all to take from this is it doesn't really matter how long you've been at a place or how well the neighbours all know you, shit happens. Take steps to be as safe as you can in your homes. Get renter's insurance, it doesn't cost all that much and it saves you a bundle of grief. And for pitty sake, use this occassion to rush right out and back up your files. When they're gone, they're gone and it really sucks.

1. And now...change all your passwords.
If you were in the habit of storing passwords on the PC, especially.

4. Yes, thanks. I'm at least that smart.
I've never been in the habit of storing passwords on my PC and I don't recommend it.

Everything has gotten or is getting a quick refreshing.

2. Damn. Sorry to hear that.
Glad you and the kitty are OK, and still have an intact sense of humor.

As for the person/persons who burgled? Let's all wish hard that their kneecaps burst into flames.

I don't know if wishing will make it so, but it's an amusing little mental image.

3. Oh, that sucks!
I'm sorry to hear about this. People suck sometimes. I hope you can replace most, if not all of your missing items.
Time to get kitty some "kitty attack training".

7. And an especially big thank you
:loveya:

to you, Martin, for talking me down from the worst part of my 'totally wigged out' mode.

Most people will never get to know the side of you that I do and to a great extent, that's a shame. I'm not voting to change this, mind you, I just feel sympathy for anyone who can't see you the way I do.

11. It's still a little creepy, I've got to say.
If only in the knowledge that someone has been through all my things.

I'll grant I was still in wigged out mode, but one of the first things I did was to wash all my sheets and laundry and do a thorough housecleaning. *shudder* It totally freaked me out that someone I didn't know came into my home and went through all my stuff.

12. That's the worst part (i.m.o.)
Your home is a private place, a sanctuary, a place where you can hide from the rest of the world. To know that somebody else, somebody unknown, has been in there is awful.

Fortunately the only times I've been burgled were when I was too young to pick on things like that - I was just annoyed at the lack of a T.V. for a couple of days.

10. I'm terribly sorry for your troubles, but I'm glad you weren't home
when it happened. And, you are correct - renter's insurance doesn't cost that much and is well worth having.

The part about having your personal space violated will take awhile to get over. I'd like to think that in the end Karma will get whoever did this.

19. Yes, thank you for the kind thoughts.
The kitty-dude and I are were not harmed and that, to me, is the important part.

It feels creepy that someone was in my home, and it stings that some things I value and worked hard for have been taken from me. But the things can be replaced and the creepiness will ebb with time.

Just glad you're ok, and probably a good thing you weren't there when it happened.

Believe in karmic payback, and I'll wish on them an old curse my friend used to use some years back:

I hope their butt leaks. Forever.

18. Sorry to hear this happened to you.
That is the reason I have a Rottweiler with a big bark. She looks intimidating, but she is really a big pussy cat. But, of course, would-be thieves don't know that. The house across the street from me was robbed and then the house next door. So I think my dog is a definite deterrent.

25. Well
I'd hoped the juxtaposition of "den of thieves and whores" with "Seattle" would be ridiculous enough that no one would take me seriously. But on DU, you can never be too sure.

23. I'm sorry this happened
The closest my family has gotten to robbery, was someone cut the top of our ski boat and stole a bunch of ropes, skis, etc. My dad freaked out and put in motion lights (which scare of no one I think), and an alarm system.

I'm thankful that you weren't home when they came.

Maybe it was someone working for the landlord doing plumbing or other maintenance?
