My supervisor just bitched at my co-worker in front of everyone
for an email she wrote that was "too harsh". I read it and I dont think she did anything wrong. She got all whiny, but I felt sorry for her. He loves to do this sort of thing in front of people. And he never takes responsibility for anything he might have forgotten to tell you..

2. That is a disgusting thing for a supervisor to do. One should never
castigate a worker in front of co-workers. I used to work for someone like that. Everyone hated him. We had a party when he was fired.

3. Praise in Public, Correct in Private
Its a basic tenant of leadership. Unfortunately too many industries are driven by managers and not leaders.

As for taking responsibility - General Eisenhower wrote a note the day before D-Day which said in a nutshell, I am totally responsible for anything that might go wrong during this upcoming action. Real men take responsibility for their every action; true leaders do such an outstanding job that the need for correction (public or private) is not necessary. To publicily ridicule a subordinate is a sign of weakness.

If the email was "too harsh", its because the supervisor did not properly instruct the subordinate before the email was sent. I could go on but I won't; except for, people "manage" things, people "lead" people.

4. Screw with him
Using an offsite computer and a throwaway email address (or type a note and mail it), send an anonymous note to HIS supervisor, saying that you overheard the exchange and found him abusive, brutal, and possibly in violation of workplace rules. Indicate that a number of people heard his comments, and they reflected poorly on the company (if you possibly can say so, indicate that workcenter visitors also heard the exchange! That usually freaks them out!). Best if you don't identify the employee who was the victim, better still if you can write it as though you were visiting the place...better still if you send the note to the supervisor's supervisor's supervisor...shit always rolls quickly downhill!!

Who knows, maybe he'll get some 'counselling' as well. Put the bastard on notice, even if you have to do it covertly. In this day and age, jobs are hard to come by, so don't stick your neck out any further than you have to....
