8. It is one of the few quasi-reliable indicators of who is trustworthy

on this board. It is not always accurate, but usually someone with 3000+ posts has been around awhile and is likely not a troll. Those with fewer posts are sometimes a bit suspect. Trolls usually accidentally (or purposely) out themselves during the first 1000 posts or so. Plus, it is just kind of fun to watch your post count skyrocket.

Having said that, welcome to DU.

I can think of only one troll with a post count over 1000, but those with under 100 posts seem to be in unlimited supply.

You are correct, many people post about misc. crap, but that is half the fun. The lounge wouldn't be the lounge without people posting about sweet fuck all.

I didn't mean to be flippant either, but that really is the reason, i believe. In the early days of DU, i think it created a sense of community since at one point, nearly everyone had just a few posts. As the regulars began posting routinely, we kept track, i think as a way of knowing who was here for the long haul. It's a habit that stuck, i guess.
