1. I sell cell phones/service, and I can't understand why anyone would carry
a pager.

It may be a little cheaper than the cheapest cell-phone plan, but with a pager you then have to find a phone, if you're not near a personal phone, to call in a reply, instead of seeing the number calling on a cell phone, and deciding whether to let it right thru to voice mail, or answer it.

This used to be a big selling argument for cell phones, but over the last few years, people looking for pagers have all but vanished (from my experience).

maybe there are advantages that I'm not seeing. (I guess it would make it easier to avoid people, if that's something that would be a benefit).

4. I can' t understand why anyone would carry either....
'Course, I unplug my phone or just ignore it, more often than not. Every now and then I erase the accumulated messages. Sometimes I even listen to one or two first. A friend of mine used to paraphrase Ulyses and say that he'd choose a place to retire by carrying a phone around until someone asked him what it was, and that's where he'd retire.

7. lol
personally, I have two cell phones (one work-provided) and a home phone.

My home phone line is for internet access only - I don't even have a phone hooked up to it.

I'm not exactly sure where my work-phone is at the moment - and I'm pretty sure the battery is dead on it anyway.

My personal cell phone I keep half-way track of. I'll check the messages, like you, from time to time, and I might answer if I recognize the caller and I want to talk to him/her.

I'm not crazy about the mobile communication craze either.

But I get customers, my God, you'd think thier phone was a kindney machine they way they go on about it.

Before I started selling these things, about five years ago, I never would have believed how "vital" these things are. "Do you have the absolute latest phone I saw advertised on MTV?????!!!!! I have to have it!!!"

yuck.

9. I carry both because
when my pager, which always works, goes off, I have to find someplace the sucky cell phone will actually work. And don't suggest that I try your service because I know they all suck. Not enough cell sites, not enough bandwidth for good fidelity in general cell phones are a scam perpetuated on the guilible. It's no wonder you have to add gadgets to them so that people will really want them.

2. I really hate carrying a pager, even though its only at work
Edited on Mon Mar-14-05 09:38 PM by madison2000
I get paged for helpdesk tickets, and I get an email too. The pager gives me the freedom to leave my desk - I won't miss knowing that something's come in and I'll know what the priority is, but its not as intrusive as a phone call. I'm using it within a huge office building.

right next to my 8-track player.

12. I haven't even seen one in years
Apparently most of the British network providers are wanting to shut down because of lack of demand. Mobiles are so ubiquitous, and with texting can be used like a pager.

I.M.O. the choice is now between standard mobile, 3G, and BlackBerry.

Being a semi-luddite I just have a normal mobile, but it's pretty much always switched on - though I may divert your call to voice-mail if I don't want to talk.
