Who the fuck came up with kewl? You're not even shortening the original word. It's totally not cool.

1. It's a pronunciation thing.
If you were saying it out loud, "kewl" would be pronounced differently than the evidently very stodgy "cool."

And of course, I am stodgy, as evidenced by my use of the word "stodgy."

8. It bugs me too
I knew a girl that instead of saying "okay" she said "otay." Now, that really got on my nerves.
And being an English major, I hate it when people come up "new" spellings. There's nothing wrong with cool, why change it?
