Abraham, Martin, and John
Edited on Sun Mar-13-05 09:02 PM by Padraig18

Has anybody here seen my old friend Abraham?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot of people but it seems the good die young
I just looked around and he's gone.

Has anybody here seen my old friend Martin?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot of people but it seems the good die young
I just looked around and he's gone.

Has anybody here seen my old friend John?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot of people but it seems the good die young
I just looked around and he's gone.

Didn't you love the things they stood for?
Didn't they try to find some good in you and me?
And we'll be free
Someday soon
It's gonna be one day

Has anybody here seen my old friend Bobby?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
I thought I saw him walking up o'er the hill
With Abraham, Martin and John

1. Just as I saw this post
That song popped up on my playlist. What a good, kinda sad song.

3. You said it, bud.
It's amazing, though, and kinda sad, that you have a greater appreciation for the history of this country than most people born and raised here. I find that rather remarkable.

4. I'm not ashamed to admit that I love this country.
Edited on Sun Mar-13-05 09:04 PM by Padraig18
In fact, I'm all the more enraged at what Bush* has done because of it. This country gave me a safe haven, and a good life, and I want to preserve that.

8. I think this quote is extremely appropriate in these times.
"A little patience, and we shall see the reign of witches pass over, their spells dissolve, and the people, recovering their true sight, restore their government to its true principles." -- Thomas Jefferson

It perfectly expresses the darkness of the situation, but faith in the people that they will right the wrong done.

10. Agreed.
I think part of my sense of history comes from being Irish-born, and knowing people who fought in an actual revolution; in a very real sense, the Founding Fathers are quite real to me, as are their words.

:)

13. You got a point.
David McCullough wrote that we oftentimes think of the Founding Fathers as distant, mythical figures in a costume pageant, when they were real, live, breathing human beings. That when they "mutually pledged their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor," it wasn't just in a manner of speaking.

P.S.: speaking of McCullough, have you had a chance to read his bio of John Adams? Brilliant read.

14. Yes, I've read it.
Freedom is a serious business to me; my own great-grandfather was hanged by the British for his activities, and some of my great-uncles wre imprisoned. When you've that in your family's recent past, it puts a different perspective on things.

18. I know
I forgive easily but I have a hard time forgiving the British for what they've done. I forgive but I dont forget.

19. I keep trying to remember that
In these times when darkness and evil really seemed to be prevailing, I take comfort from this quote:

"When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they seem invincible but in the end, they always fall -- think of it, ALWAYS."

Gandhi said that. And if he could believe with all he saw, then so can I.

12. It's such a sweet and sad song...
It gives me chills every time I hear it. It also reminds me that there are people out there working to make this world a better place. Unfortunately they are the ones that always get shot.

17. This reminded me of something I hadn't thought of for years.
So I Googled for it and thanks BTW for letting me think of it again.

Link : http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=334096

In 1971 during all the angst of the Civil Rights Era, the Viet Nam fiasco and the corrupt political scene an LA DJ named Tom Clay put together something that was released to the Top 40 radio stations. It had exerpts from speeches by JFK, RFK and MLK while in the background played "Abraham, Martin and John" and Jackie DeShannon's "What the World Needs Now (is Love, Sweet Love)". At the end of the recording there was a male interviewer who asked a little girl various questions and she responded with beautiful innocence, see the link.

If you ever get a chance to hear this, I recommend it highly.
