I lost my friend last night
She was beautiful, 38, and quite the princess. My friend passed over around 11:00pm PST after a very long struggle with AIDS. She was infected by a boyfriend in the mid-eighties who knew he had the virus and did not tell her. She was always so afraid of telling anyone of her condition because of what she had experienced in the past. She was infected before the Ryan White dust up and never forgot the isolation and paranoia that AIDS inspires in others, then and even today.

I first noticed her with mutual friends, she stood out because instead of that "pretty in punk" look that many women in my circle tend to emulate, she ALWAYS look like she had just stepped out of an Ann Taylor ad. I fell for her right off and asked her out 4-5 times with the same result (no). Finally I asked her to the opera and she said that she would go on one condition, I wear a coat and tie.

I was not the "guy" for her but we both loved each other and spent a great deal of time together during the last year and a half. We talked on the phone every day, and shared all our thoughts, hopes and fears.

Last Sunday, I took her to breakfast at the "Original Pancake House" in Mission Viejo, then shopping (her most favorite past-time) at Nordstrom’s and other department stores looking for a replacement to a Swarvorsky crystal figurine that broke when a curio shelf that I hung in her bedroom fell. We hung out watching t.v. till late Sunday night and I left not knowing that that would be the last time I saw her feeling well. We talked as usual Monday, and Tuesday nights, and she was fine. When I got home from work Wednesday she had left a message on my machine saying that she was in trouble and to come help her.

I am one of three people who have a key to her place for such emergencies. I drove from Torrance to Irvine as fast as I could to find an empty apartment. I used her phone to track her last calls and got a hold of her best girlfriend who told me which hospital she was in. When I got to her bedside she told me that in case she went into a coma she needed to tell me even though I pissed her off on occasion she really loved me. I stayed with her till very late and did not leave till they gave her a sedative. I went back Thursday and stayed till 2:am she was very uncomfortable. I called in sick Friday, and we almost lost her several times that day until she stabilized and I stayed with her till 2:am again. Yesterday I called first thing in the morning and her brother said she was stable and I took care of some business before heading for the hospital. Her room was empty and one of the nurses directed me to the I.C.U. I got there and our friends said that she was asking for me.

40 minutes before I got to the hospital she was demanding (a princess to the end) her cell phone to call me, but they don't allow cells to be used in I.C.U. Her family was trying to get my number from her cell to the wireless phone that is used in I.C.U. just has they gave her the last morphine push. Her brother told me she went out with the phone in her hand. When I got to her bedside she was breathing very shallowly, I told her that I was there and that I loved her with all my heart, and I would see here again. She tried to respond but could not form words or even open her eyes. I told her that she had fought the good fight, and it was o.k. to let go, that I loved her and would see her on the other side. I kissed her for the last time and left her with her family.

I am far richer for her friendship. In a short time she taught me so much about life, and living with dignity. There is a hole in my heart, but not in my soul.

Princess I love you, and I will see you again.
Dennis

I'll add my condolences. It is very obvious she was much loved and know that it is also obvious that you are much loved also.

May Mother Earth hold you to her breast and ease your burden, May Father Sky watch over you always. May the Lord lift your heart with his countenance.

Thank you for the beautiful tribute to your friend. I'm wishing you peace and warm thought as you grieve.

If I may be so bold, I wanted to correct your story. You said that you weren't the "guy". It seems to me that you were the "guy" for her. Love needn't be romantic to be real. You were both blessed to have the love of a true friend.

Hugs.

Many turn their backs and walk away on those that become ill or disabled in life.

I commend you for being her friend and being there for her. I am sure it meant more to her than you could ever possibly imagine.

31. Peace to you, brother
You were lucky to know each other. Few people have such a depth of feeling even after being married for years. Yes, you will see each other again. Count on it.

I hope you find some comfort remembering your relationship with her. She'll always be with you.

Here's a bit of my favorite Walt Whitman, from "Song of Myself":

I depart as air, I shake my white locks at the runaway sun,
I effuse my flesh in eddies, and drift it in lacy jags.

I bequeath myself to the dirt to grow from the grass I love,
If you want me again look for me under your boot-soles.

You will hardly know who I am or what I mean,
But I shall be good health to you nevertheless,
And filter and fibre your blood.

Failing to fetch me at first keep encouraged,
Missing me one place search another,
I stop somewhere waiting for you.

You were lucky to have known and loved her and she was lucky to have you as a part of her life.

There is little consolation when a loved one dies but I think when we love someone we give a little piece of our heart away and get a little piece in return. And if we are very blessed we end up without our own hearts at all but a patchwork of all those we have loved. And it makes us stronger and richer and infinitely better.

Khash.

I am so sorry for your loss.

How amazing that you were able to say such beautiful things to her, before she died. I've heard that people do respond to a loved one telling them that it's ok to go.

I loved hearing the story about how you two met--and your impressions of her and her clothes. You helped to create a very vivid picture of her--and I feel like I can picture her in my mind.

Thanks for reminding us all how important our friends are.

I'm so glad that she had you in her life--and that you had her also.

I hope you are doing ok. I wish you peace, strength and healing as you deal with this loss.

Take care,

My dear friend, who I lost in the early 90's went in a very similar way. He lived to the fullest all the way up until the end. I had talked with him a few days before we had a date to go to an arboretum he loved, where we both had worked, and he wasn't home when I got there to pick him up.

I knew that he must have been in the hospital, because he was one of the most considerate people I've ever, ever known, and he would never stand anyone up. I drove straight to the hospital, and indeed, he was there, with family. He was just about to go under a morphine drip when I got there, and he gave me a big kiss and told me he was ready to go.

He was an extraordinary person, who knew what was important in life. Friends, spirit, and life, life, life. He honored life in everything he did, and especially since we worked with plants, he was able to nurture it, as well.

I deeply loved and respected him, and I miss him to this day. He was one of the few people in my life who could send me on a laughing jag, the kind that you can't stop, no matter what. Just a look at the other person sends you back over the edge, until tears are flowing down your face.

He was one of those people who made you want to live up to his lovely expectations. He always inspired me to be kinder, gentler, sweeter... He pursued his spirituality in a generous, but never judgemental way, and opened doors to me and my soul that I thought had been closed.

I was always grateful that when he was ready, on his first visit to the hospital, he was able to cross over. He worked very hard to prepare himself for that time, because he did not want to linger.

Roger, I miss you, and I think of you whenever I see the beauty of this world, which you cherished so. I see you dancing away from me, in the spring flowers, with a mischeivous grin. Bless you for making my life richer.

82. What a gorgeous tribute! My condolences ! I , too, lost my best friend to
this disease. He also contacted it during the time everyone was paranoid. He was concerned that I would think he was stupid ,so he didn't tell me until it was obvious. I miss him dearly. I wish both you and the "Princess " peace.

83. Dennis-- an amazing tribute to wonderful friend...
...and you were a wonderful friend to your princess, too. I have tears in my eyes after reading that.

You made your friend's life so much richer and fuller -- she was fortunate to have a friend like you. You both added so much to each other's lives, and that is what friendship is all about.

My thoughts are with you...

86. Way to Hang in There Dennis
It is not often that people are strong enough to stay with someone till the end.

She must have been one heck of a person, as are you. Thanks for sharing the experience, by doing so we can all appreciate her great humanity and your great courage.

91. Words, I so badly want to offer words of compassion,
caring and sympathy but at times like this, my words feel so weak. Maybe that's why we have moments of silence in tribute to a great loss. I will be still and silent in memory of your beloved friend.
