1. Well when was the last you ever head from Hootie and The Blowfish?
Hell I was a sophmore in high school the last time I heard a new song from them.

6. The man has to eat, dammit!
The last time I saw Hootie and the Blowfish they were playing a free concert in St. Louis. This was probably about 4 years ago ... I was suprised at how few people were actually there. :( (I actually have a similar memory of the B-52's, right before 'Love Shack' made them big again--it was a 'Puppet Show and Spinal Tap' moment at Six Flags.)

I always liked Hootie and never understood why it suddenly became cool to not like them.

BTW, Darius is NOT Hootie!

9. Best commercial on television
Every three days on DU, someone posts a "Has Hootie sold out?" thread. Is this an orchestrated attack, or do you all not visit here very often?

It's a great ad. It's entertaining, and it makes you remember who the ad is for and what the product is. It's assembled porn star Jenna Jameson, The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders, and Brooke Burke in a setting that's so hallucinatory, I can't believe an ad agency had the guts or creativity to come up with it.

Best of all, it's got all of you talking about it, giving the ad life far beyond its 30 seconds. Advertisers LOVE this, and they love you for helping them.

16. Hootie can do what he wants...
What really bothered me was how they used an old folk song. A song about hard times where a mans greatest dream was to live or find the great Rock Candy mountain where a man did not have to be hungry or want for the basics, nor worry about being abused. Now the song has been co-opted by a giant corporation thats is the very thing the original song was against, and part of the problems of the original singer/writer. A sickening irony i tell you.

18. Do you not believe...

BK and MacDonalds are targeting the exact same type of demographic today? When I was a kid, "McDonalds" ads were about selling "fun" (with that creepy clown). Now watch closely... the fast food pushers aren't so much offering 'fun' as they are offering a (very) affordable hot meal.

Why do you think so much of their advertising is minority targeted, and why so many franchises are in poor areas?

on edit: "meal" in the loosest possible terms.

21. Someone who gets it
The elusive Rock Candy Mountain is a timeless dream. Living on candy may not be the best for you, but at least you would be a vegan.

24. Omigod! That's Hootie?
I knew he looked familiar--like a heavy D. B. Woodside (Principal Wood from Buffy)--but couldn't place him.

My wife agrees that this may be the oddest commercial we have seen in many years. I like it precisely because it's so odd that it doesn't seem to be advertising anything (I couldn't have told you which burger chain, f'r instance).
