What song is so good it gives you chills?
For me it is about anything by Rage Against the Machine particularly their cover of "Maggie's Farm".

What song gives you chills?

32. Ditto-Sort of...
Funny you say that ...

The other day I heard the Beatles "The Long and Winding Road". I suddenly found myself misty eyed and entranced.

What a sentimental song.

doesn't give me chills, it makes me want to cry, especially when I hear it today, 40+ years after it was first released, and realize it is still an accurate description of how screwed up our world is.

11. Ain't Too Proud to Beg....The Temptations
Edited on Fri Mar-11-05 09:20 PM by charlyvi
It makes me feel my youth again!

:hippie:

know you wanna leave me,
but I refuse to let you go
If I have to beg and plead for your sympathy,
I don't mind coz' you mean that much to me

Ain't too proud to beg, sweet darlin
Please don't leave me girl, don't you go
Ain't to proud to plead, baby, baby
Please don't leave me, girl, don't you go

Now I heard a cryin' man,
is half a man with no sense of pride
But if I have to cry to keep you,
I don't mind weepin' if it'll keep you by my side

Ain't to proud to beg, sweet darlin
Please don't leave me girl, don't you go
Ain't to proud to plead, baby, baby
Please don't leave me girl, don't you go

If I have to sleep on your doorstep
all night and day just to keep you from walkin' away
let your friends laugh, even this I can stand
cause I want to keep you any way I can

Ain't too proud to beg, sweet darlin'
Please don't leave me girl, don't you go
Ain't to proud to plead, baby, baby
Please don't leave me girl, don't you go

Now I've gotta love so deep in the pit of my heart
And each day it grows more and more
I'm not ashamed to come and plead to you baby
If pleadin' keeps you from walkin' out that door

Ain't too proud to beg, you know it sweet darlin'
Please don't leave me girl, don't you go
Ain't to proud to plead, baby, baby
Please don't leave me girl, don't you go
Baby, baby, baby, baby (sweet darling)

19. The Load-Out by Jackson Browne
Now the seats are all empty
Let the roadies take the stage
Pack it up and tear it down
They're the first to come and last to leave
Working for that minimum wage
They'll set it up in another town
Tonight the people were so fine
They waited there in line
And when they got up on their feet they made the show
And that was sweet...
But I can hear the sound
Of slamming doors and folding chairs
And that's a sound they'll never know

Now roll them cases out and lift them amps
Haul them trusses down and get'em up them ramps
'Cause when it comes to moving me
You guys are the champs
But when that last guitar's been packed away
You know that I still want to play
So just make sure you got it all set to go
Before you come for my piano

But the band's on the bus
And they're waiting to go
We've got to drive all night and do a show in Chicago
or Detroit, I don't know
We do so many shows in a row
And these towns all look the same
We just pass the time in our hotel rooms
And wander 'round backstage
Till those lights come up and we hear that crowd
And we remember why we came

Now we got country and western on the bus
R and B, we got disco in eight tracks and cassettes in stereo
We've got rural scenes & magazines
We've got truckers on the CB
We've got Richard Pryor on the video
We got time to think of the ones we love
While the miles roll away
But the only time that seems too short
Is the time that we get to play

People you've got the power over what we do
You can sit there and wait
Or you can pull us through
Come along, sing the song
You know you can't go wrong
'Cause when that morning sun comes beating down
You're going to wake up in your town
But we'll be scheduled to appear
A thousand miles away from here

People, stay just a little bit longer
We wanna play just a little bit longer
Now the promoter don't mind
And the union don't mind
If we take a little time 'fore we leave you all behind
and sing one more song.

28. Boston: FOREPLAY/LONG TIME
It’s been such a long time
I think I should be goin’, yeah
And time doesn’t wait for me, it keeps on rollin’
Sail on, on a distant highway
I’ve got to keep on chasin’ a dream
I’ve gotta be on my way
Wish there was something I could say.

Well I’m takin’ my time, I’m just movin’ on
You’ll forget about me after I’ve been gone
And I take what I find, I don’t want no more
It’s just outside of your front door.

It’s been such a long time. it’s been such a long time.

Well I get so lonely when I am without you
But in my mind, deep in my mind,
I can’t forget about you
Good times, and faces that remind me
I’m tryin’ to forget your name and leave it all behind me
You’re comin’ back to find me.

Well I’m takin’ my time, I’m just movin’ on
You’ll forget about me after i’v e been gone
And I take what I find, I don’t want no more
It’s just outside of y our front door.

It’s been such a long time. it’s been such a long time.

Yeah. it’s been such a long time, I think I should be goin’, yeah
And time dosnt wait for me, it keeps on rollin’
There’s a long road, I’ve gotta stay in time with
I’ve got to keep on chasin’ that dream, though I may never find it
I’m always just behind it.

Well I’m takin’ my time, I’m just movin’ along
Takin’ my time, just movin’ along
Takin’ my time, takin’ my time...

101. I agree
Musically the French and Russian anthems majorly kick-ass. The American one is damn fine music too (even if the words are about fighting us Brits).

The Canadian and Ozzie anthems are very good and heart-wrenching (though the words to the latter are a tad naff - no offence to any Australians).

'God save the Queen' does get me going every time, along with other patriotic British/English songs - Jerusalem when accompanied by a stonking great organ is mindblowing.

rush" "limelight"....the guitar solo near the end gives me goosebumps...

"the rage" by judas priest.....

"find your way back" by jefferson starship is another...the wall of sound recording technique and the last line from it gives me chills....

Taps-I play the trumpet and the bugle. I have been to a few military funerals and I can feel the shiver at the base of my spine every time I hear it.
Amazing Grace-but only on the bagpipes. It's been played at more than one family funeral and I cry every time I hear it now.
Mercy, Mercy, Me-can't explain it-it just does.
Comfortably Numb-obvious, as is Possession.
Last Goodbye-Jeff Buckley. I have to sit and listen every time-it makes me stick right to my spot until the very end.

155. Actually, pick it up . . . you'll be pleasantly surprised.
The only piece off the mark on the whole thing is Brian's 62-year-old Carl Spackler-ish voice taking the lead where Carl and a Brian who could hit high notes once did. But other than that, it stays true to the original sound.

That was my biggest reservation going in. Let's face it: when older artists re-make their past songs, either live or in the studio, the result is almost always disastrous and fraudulent-sounding. All I had going through my head was visions of glitzy, Vegas-like ersatz-sounding overproduced versions of "Cabin Essence" and "Wonderful", complete with Fisher-Price MIDI, valiumized vocals and chintzy, ClearChannel sound. Its like when Elton John performs his old songs live now, they're completely unlistenable thanks to flatulent arrangement being favored over the stripped and subtle.

But once I heard the new "Smile", all my doubts flew clean out the window.

As far as the music goes, the sound, instrument tonality, timbre and flow on "Smile" contains very little modernization to it and lots of retro authenticity, and that's what I praise Brian for above anything: that he was true to the original SOUND. The arrangements sound as haunting as the original, as does the instrumentation. There's no fakery to this re-creation; rather, it's like hearing a remastered version of the original, and in some places more vibrant and beautiful. Even the vocals of the Beach Boys are captured with some respect by the Wondermints without straying too far or drowning in over-embelishment. "Cabin Essence", "Child is the Father of Man" and "Heroes and Villains" are just as brilliant as I remember hearing them from the bootleg versions, only with far better production.

It's called "How Can A Poor Man Stand Such Times And Live" Recorded by Blind Alfred Reed in 1929. The song is still relevant today.>

There once was a time when everything was cheap,
But now prices nearly puts a man to sleep.
When we pay our grocery bill,
We just feel like making our will --
Tell me how can a poor man stand such times and live

I remember when dry goods were cheap as dirt,
We could take two bits and buy a dandy shirt.
Now we pay three bucks or more,
Maybe get a shirt that another man wore --
Tell me how can a poor man stand such times and live?

Well, I used to trade with a man by the name of Gray,
Flour was fifty cents for a twenty-four pound bag.
Now it's a dollar and a half beside,
Just like a-skinning off a flea for the hide --
Tell me how can a poor man stand such times and live?

Oh, the schools we have today ain't worth a cent,
But they see to it that every child is sent.
If we don't send everyday,
We have a heavy fine to pay --
Tell me how can a poor man stand such times and live?

Prohibition's good if 'tis conducted right,
There's no sense in shooting a man 'til he shows flight.
Officers kill without a cause,
They complain about funny laws --
Tell me how can a poor man stand such times and live?

Most all preachers preach for gold and not for souls,
That's what keeps a poor man always in a hole.
We can hardly get our breath,
Taxed and schooled and preached to death --
Tell me how can a poor man stand such times and live?

Oh, it's time for every man to be awake,
We pay fifty cents a pound when we ask for steak.
When we get our package home,
A little wad of paper with gristle and a bone --
Tell me how can a poor man stand such times and live?

Well, the doctor comes around with a face all bright,
And he says in a little while you'll be all right.
All he gives is a humbug pill,
A dose of dope and a great big bill --
Tell me how can a poor man stand such times and live?

196. Everybody Hurts - R.E.M.
When your day is long and the night,
The night is yours alone,
When you're sure you've had enough
With this life,
Well hang on

Don't let yourself go,
'Couse everybody cries
And everybody hurts sometimes

Sometimes everything is wrong
Now it's time to sing along
When your days is night alone,
If you feel like letting go,
When you think you've had too much
Of this life,
Well hang on

Everybody hurts
Take comfort in your friends
Everybody hurts
Don't throw your hand
Oh, no
Don't throw your hand
If you feel like you're alone,
No, no, no, you are not alone

If you're on your own in this life,
The days and nights are long,
When you think you've had too much
Of this life to hang on

Well, everybody hurts,
Sometimes everybody cries
And everybody hurts sometimes
And everybody hurts sometimes
So, hold on, hold on, hold on...
(Everybody hurts... You are not alone)
