I want my DU friends to see this photo of my grandmother & me.

Last month I went home. Saw Grandma at Quaker Gardens, where she's been for a year. She's 88. She doesn't know me, but she took my hand about halfway through through the visit and didn't let go. It melted my heart.

So, thanks for looking.

(Oh -- the goofy gap-mouthed smile is because I was laughing.)

(Oh yeah -- and I couldn't get it to rotate! Will have to fix at home.)

2. Glad you took the picture.
My mother, her mother and my FIL all got Alzheimer's at the same time. We were just in survivor mode for so long that making pictures just went by the wayside. We took movies of our kids at the nursing home playing softball in the side yard. A couple of years later we were looking at them and were so disappointed we did not have much footage at all of my mother and grandmother sitting there. I think in the back of our minds was the fact that they were no longer immaculately dressed and groomed like they used to be and we tried to not document that but now I wish we had more movies and pictures of them. Great shot!

10. I took almost 300 pictures during that visit.
So glad the digital age finally hit cameras. (I like film too, though.)

17. My sister taught me to say "du bist meine Großmum" --
"you are my grandma" in low German. My Grandma spoke only German until age 6.

Of course, five minutes later I'd have to say, "I'm Kim, and you're my grandmother. Du bist meine Großmum." :) Once in a while she'd say, "I am?" :7

I love her so.

My mom's got AD, she still knows who I am but it's gonna be really hard the first time she doesn't recognize me.

12. I had a buffer.
I hadn't seen her in five years. When I last saw her, she knew me but she kept having to be reminded of my name. My sisters saw the degeneration. I feel guilty about it, naturally.

 You'll get through it, Flaxbee. I'm sorry.
