can, ugh, MS Internet Explored be DESTROYED???
or removed or something.

I have to get rid of the HATEFUL thing. it is so corrupt that it simply won't work with my new broadband service.

AOL works
OPERA works
but IE............... AYEIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!! fugeddaboutit

can't delete it.
can't uninstall it.
can't update it.
can't open Internet Options to fix whatever godforsaken settings are preventing any links (that open to a new window) to work.

the thing is so screwed up that it can't even detect the broadband connection unless AOL or OPERA are already connected and running. keeps asking for a dial-up connection!

wit's end was passed before lunch.

2. A couple of questions first -
Is it AOL broadband?

What's your Operating System?

7. a couple of answers...
it is RoadRunner Broadband (which AOL seems to like just fine)

OS is Windows XP with the Servicepack 2 installed.

any thoughts now?

IS IE so locked to XP that you can't remove it? it doesn't even appear on the Uninstall list....

11. I'm having similar "issues" with IE!
You can't fix it because you need IE to download patches, right? Do you have other users on your computer, or are you the only one? My wife and daughter have their own user desktops. My wife's IE is the only one that works. :wtf:

17. It's possible.
But it's also possible you might find out your OS is as fucked up as the IE. True story! (But creating a new user might actually work. It's worth a shot.)

22. You can't get rid of IE
XP won't let you. So - go here, and install Mozilla Firefox:

http://www.mozilla.org/

Make it your default browser. I absolutely love it and prefer it to IE.

When you say AOL works just fine - do you still have AOL software installed on your PC? Or are you talking about AIM? I suggest you get rid of AOL entirely since you have broadband. You can still keep your AOL account, just get rid of the software.

5. i have a feeling that in XP, ie is a part of the os.
it's a silly concept, i know. and i'm not entirely sure if that's certain or not, but that's what i've heard.

use firefox. or mozilla. or any of the mozilla-base browsers. they're all better than ie.

24. IE is part of the OS with XP
because you need it to "talk" to Microsoft and receive updates, etc. As you say, best to use Firefox as the default browser and only use IE when necessary.

20. pretty sure XPlite can do it, tho you may hafta buy the full version
I used to run a 98se machine stripped down with 98lite to a win95 graphical shell and zero fluff. It was FAST and remarkably stable for a 9x system.

Haven't played with XPlite in awhile - I'm back to windows 2000 for my gatesbox.

13. I don't think you can get rid of it
Well, you might be able to, but it seems to be deeply rooted in the OS. I tried to get rid of it once before, but it was always still there.

I've never had a problem with IE picking up the connection though, and I've got broadband. Networking/intenet stuff isn't really my specialty, so I can't really help you :(

21. If you have the XP CD-ROM handy, one of these solutions might work:
Method 1: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x Repair for Windows XP

* From the Start menu, select Run.
* In the Open field, type sfc /scannow (Note: There is a space between sfc and /scannow)
* Select the OK button.
* Follow the prompts throughout the System File Checker process.
* Reboot the computer when System File Checker completes.

Method 2: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x Repair for Windows XP

* From the Start menu, select Search, select All Files and Folders.
* Select More Advanced Options and place a checkmark beside Search Hidden Files and Folders option.
* Ensure that Search System Folders and Search Subfolders are also checked.
* In the All or Part of the File Name box, type ie.inf
* In the Look In drop-down menu, select C: or the letter of the hard drive that contains the Windows folder.
* Click the Search button.
* In the search results pane, find the ie.inf file located in Windows\Inf folder.
* Right click the ie.inf file and click Install on the context menu.
* Reboot the computer when the file copy process is complete.

I also use http://www.annoyances.org/ to solve many XP problems.)
Good luck!
