Do you have a favorite painting (or any work of art)?
Edited on Thu Mar-10-05 04:21 PM by Lavender Brown
I like going to see John Singer Sargent's Portrait of Madame X at the Met.

It caused an uproar when it was first unveiled in Paris, so Sargent painted the diamond strap back on her shoulder. This is a photo of the painting as it originally looked:

What are your favorites?

1. I like Van Gogh--the one of the bedroom, w/ the yellow chair. And
I like Georgia O'Keeffe an awful lot. (No lesbian jokes, please.) :)

7. DALI!
I'm lousy with painting names, so bear with me:

- Persistence of Memory (but that's too beaten);
- The one with Gaia about to be woken up by two tigers;
- Jesus crucified on a tesseract;
- The Last Supper (with the dodecahedron).

And lots more I surely forget.

23. I have an unsigned Dali Lithograph
in my living room.

He did a bunch for the a production of the Divine Comedy but died before he finished the commission.

Some of his work weren't signed, so we were able to pick one up at auction.

Andy Warhol's entire flower series (or anything by Warhol for that matter):

The list goes on! Magritte, Rembrandt, Dali, Degas, (Francis) Bacon...

15. Sure!
It's impossible to have just one. I'm just into this one right now because I'm reading (fiction) about the subject of the painting. Plus it's local and I can see it whenever I stop at the Met. There are so many painters I love... including the one in my sig.

Gotta love Warhol. :)

11. It is impossible to have a favorite for me. I like too many in different
ways. There's St Anthony receiving the Stigmata at the Fricke (as well as the Vermeer, the Ingres - see what I'm sayin'?)

26. I Wonder What The Story Is?
Was she stood-up? She's still wearing what looks to be an overcoat, so she hasn't yet been to her seat. She's leaning on the wall as though she's been waiting. Her hand held up to her face is a sign of stress. It hints that she's trying to hide her sadness, or perhaps that she's worried.

Or maybe she's just an usher (usherette?) and she's just weary from standing on duty, and she's just bored as she's waiting for the movie to end.

28. Le Juene Martyre by Paul Delaroche
My mom bought me a daily calendar book from The Louvre when she went to Paris back in 1995, and a print of this painting was featured. I fell in love with it instantly. I bought a print of it from art.com. Here it is hanging on my bedroom wall.

33. Ancient Roman painting is intriguing

Like the frescoes at the Villa of the Mysteries in Pompeii. They're so sophisticated and delicate, compared to the painting Europeans did in the millennium right after:
