I hate the 80's
Well, not me, but Jim DeRogatis, the Pop Music Critic of the Sun-Times says he does.

http://www.suntimes.com/output/entertainment/cst-ftr-eighties10.html

--"...... the '80s music that is most often celebrated in the mainstream 20 years on -- and which is being re-sold now with the most gusto -- tends to be the very worst. In fact, an argument can be made that the decade was the most god-awful in rock history."--

Come to think of it, I DO hate the 80's!!!!!!!

20. Oh but I did...
my parents were loyal club-goers for the entire decade of 1980, even after I was born, and growing up and to this day I still get all the best 80s music pumped into my brain! When I was younger it was nonstop! I practically lived through it with them! :D

Ick. I tend to discount anything that horrid rag has to say.

I liked most of the music from the 80's. Doug and I have talked about this. He basically thinks I'm an idiot. :-) He says the 70's were much better, music wise.

And I agree pretty much with De Rogatis. I actually agree with Homer Simpson, who said music achieved its peak in 1974. :-)

9. The 80s were a drag
Of course there was some good music to come out of the 80s, but most of it was terrible. The whole decade sucked for the most part and I do not look fondly on that decade.
I didn't mind the 80s dance music as much as I couldn't stand the hair bands. Spandex, hairspray and eyeliner just didn't cut it.

17. I think those 10 reasons could be said...
Edited on Thu Mar-10-05 01:52 PM by dean_dem
...for any pop music of any decade. It was said on another board that pop music is not about the art of music, its about the entertainment, and if DeRogatis is such a humorless old-fart that he can't see that, I feel sorry for him. Sometimes your brain just needs a little junk food.

I hate the 80s too, as a matter of fact. Not the actual decade mind you, but this disorted view of "the 80s" where it was all funny haircuts, crappy drum machines and mountains of coke. I also hate ignorant people who perpetuate the notion that all music during that decade was like that (VH1, I'm looking at you). So yeah, Motley Crue sucked. Johnny Hates Jazz sucked. "She Blinded Me With Science" is probably one of the worst songs ever written. But just like the music of the 90s wasn't all the Spice Girls and Ace of Base, the 80s wasn't all Flock of Seagulls and "Mickey". But if you're too lazy to find music outside of what is on the radio or MTV, then you don't get the right to bitch about it.

And I'll just say that while much of mainstream 80s music did in fact suck, I'll still take Spandau Ballet over Good Charlotte any fucking day of the week.

ETA: For the record, "99 Luft Balloons" and "White Wedding" were both spectacular songs, and they were both "mainstream" hits.

31. I remember the entire decade clearly.
I was 13 when it started and 23 when it ended. Of course, I remember the funny haircuts and drum machines (coke was never my thing). But I also remember other music, other fashions, news, politics, life in general.

It's somewhat amusing to me how my daughter (almost 18) and her friends view the 80s. To them, the entire decade WAS huge hair, bangle bracelets and leg warmers. My daughter was recently trying to come up with an outfit for an 80s day at school. I made a few preppy-ish suggestions and she looked at me like I'd turned green.

"They didn't wear stuff like that in the 80s, Mother!"

They didn't? I was there. I was one of "them."

I think she forgot that for a minute.

Is he still doing that "musical version of Ebert and Roeper" on PBS up there? I had dinner with he and some other folks, and he was talking about it. His show sounded interesting at least. He was kind of pompous.

The Roeper to his Ebert is a guy named Greg Kot, I think. Kot works for the Trib and embarrasses "Jimmy D" on a weekly basis, or did. When I was reheasing on Tuesdays, I would tune in to the show which ran Tuesday nights from 10-midnight.

They want to take it national. I thought it was PBS, but I guess more like NPR. I think that's a great idea for a show. I should listen. I need to remind myself! Thanks for the link.

That was an awesome dinner. Kot, some guy from Jersy who puts out a punk magazine, Lucinda Williams' publicist...it was fun. SOmetimes it's good when your friends date music journalists.

If it weren't for speed metal, early rap, hardcore, USA Night Flight and The Young Ones, that decade would have been a complete lost cause. Everyone was mean and bastardish for no reason and I got shitty grades on an almost continual basis no matter HOW much I studied.

Even taking away most of the others, The Smiths, Crowded House and The Police made the decade worthwhile IMHO.

43. Personally, I think the 80's were weird.
AIDS came out right at the beginning of the decade, no cure in sight, thousands died, including one of my friends. People were scared that Reagan was going to get us into a nuclear war.

As to music, there were the Go-Go's, the Bangles, Tones on Tail, the Waitresses, Adam and the Ants, Rita Mitsouka, Cher's second or third comeback, Tia ("Boy Toy"), the B-52's - a lot of memorable stuff. Changed the course of history in fact, as these acts presaged the fall of the Soviet Union.

The Jam put out 2 good albums in the early 80s then broke up, The Smiths released a few good ones, The Cure released two good ones, U2's first few albums were excellent (Joshua Tree is highly overrated though,) Stone Roses released their first one at the tail end of 89 and uh...that's about it. Yep, rest of it sucked

"Generation X," who was born in 1961, said the only good thing about the '80s (music or otherwise) was REM.

I went to college in the early and mid-80s, and I cringe when I hear just about any music from that era.
