1000th post - who i am
hi, this is my 1000th post here at DU. i live in new delhi india. i moved a year ago to delhi from bangalore, where i worked in Hewlett-Packard's outsourced business process division. i quit that job and am now looking for a break in documentary making.
i moved in to DU via bartcop.com, a month after 911. once here, i got addicted to the forums, and DU became my chief source for news.
one day i complained to skinner at the "Ask the Admin" forum that I could not perform effective searches, upon which i was told only donors have that privilege. i don't have a credit card nor do i earn in a lot of dollars, so was not able to donate to DU. a couple of days later, i found a star next to my name. someone here (bless him/her) sponsored me, and still does. to that unknown person, thank you once again!
i don't know if you are aware, but apparently indians were one of few people who have a favorable impression of bush jr. fuck 'em i say. this is one indian who knows what's right for the world. if i could have voted in the democratic primaries, i would have rooted and voted for kucinich/dean. those guys know how to heal the world.

DU is a great place. its given me a lot of talking points - from analysing what's wrong with the world to peak oil to the defence of gaanja. i love everyone here and have learnt a lot.

Congratulations on your milestone!
I'm curious, why do Indians have a good impression of Bush?

8. thanks all.. to BlackVelvetElvis...
i think that's because, and i had pointed this out earlier, indians have a good impression of america, and bush got the benefit of that. but there is also a very racist streak out here amongst the majority hindus.. which feels that anybody who is anti-muslim is a "good man."
its not for nothing that i refer to india as the "3rd world america."
cheers again!

I was wondering what happened to ya! Nice to see ya again.

I'm not completely sure many Indians really like Bush (though there are some dumbshit greedy republican doctors here in the US that do). When I visited family in Bangalore, my relatives couldn't stand Bush. They would ask why Americans liked him...

The only survey I saw was one where it was split. Now, why Bush had even that much support I don't know. Plus if Bush had that much support there, India might have gone along with Bush on the war. They were smart enough not to.

Those idiot RWers (both US repuke expats and Hindu RW nationalist types) that support Bush are supporting an administration that has given billions of dollars in military aid to Pakistan.

i'm surprised someone remembers my old nic! to address your observation, i don't think most indians "support" bush, but have a "favorable impression" of the monkey. most of the people i meet see no difference between him and other US presidents (esp as far as support for the general across the border is concerned). nobody here seems to give a shit about the way the world is being screwed up. SUV sales have jumped 400% in 3 years out here... u think the majority in india is aware about anything other than today's prime time tv shows?
yeah, there are many of us like your relatives in bangalore.... but in a nation of 1 billion, we are the woeful minority.

16. I still don't completely agree
that most have a favorable impression of Bush. My guess is that most Indians view him as an idiot (though they might not quite understand how dangerous he actually is).

I remember talking to quite a few relatives and none of them liked Bush. They never saw any rationale for the war in Iraq (I was there last one week before the war started).

I also know on the other hand, that they love Clinton. One of my aunts was going on about how charming he seemed when he visited the country.

I agree that most aren't concerned about the world in general and in many ways they are becoming more materialistic. I think the "me" mentality is catching hold of people, especially since the multinationals started investing. My impression though is that they have become so disillusioned with politicians that they have given up. I remember several of them laughing about voting. Corruption seems so rampant in many ways that it's just an accepted way of life.

But atleast among those I spoke to (mostly educated middle class people), they seemed to dislike Bush.
