2. First one in four years.
Less than a thousand back from the Feds; a modest amount owed to the state.

5. One out of two isn't bad.
We owe for both. How depressing. Thanks Bush.

7. two out of three, actually
live in nj, work in ny, pay taxes to both.

planned it that way. state income tax payments are deductible on federal taxes. of course, then the refund is taxable next year,....

4. Yeah, luckily
Income under $40k before taxes, moving, unemployment, kid, student... yeah. But not next year, no way. Both of us have real, full-time jobs now that pay pretty well.

6. Do only married people owe? I have never not gotten a refund.
Is that why the Republicans cry about the marriage penalty?

I don't understand taxes at all. Seems if you have the correct info on your W-4, they should just take out the correct taxes and leave you alone.

I am very tax stupid.

8. 3700 from feds, 300 from the state...
I happen to have a great accountant, and I keep great records.

9. Good accountants are worth their weight in gold. I got $7000 this year
A $7,000 refund for a couple with an $81,000 joint income isn't bad at all. My accountant deducted everything from the sales taxes I spent on the new car I bought last year, to the depreciated value of my home computer, to various hospital bills and prescriptions.

For what it's worth, I ran my numbers through Turbotax before heading down there and would have only received about $2,400 if I did my taxes myself. In my book, he's worth every penny of the $625 he charged to do them for me.
