1. Me too , LACMA, seems like yesterday.
Going again in July.
What most impressed me was the like new condition of all the wooden objects - statues, little boxes, considering how impossibly old it all is.

2. I did and it was fantastic..... You don't believe you're looking at

items crafted thousands of years ago. It just blows your mind what a high level of civilization they must have had. Glad you got tickets..it's something all of us "kids" will remember having seen, the rest of our lives.

When will tickets be available? How crazy crowded will it be? Where are they gonna have it in LA?

I can't wait!

16. Fantastic! thanks!!
I'm looking forward to seeing it!

I think I'll go on a weekday to avoid the crowds, but it's probably gonna have field trip kids there every day it's open. Oh well!

6. I saw it in Grade 5, in Toronto ...
Edited on Wed Mar-09-05 04:57 PM by Lisa
I remember, when I saw the advance notices of where it was going on tour, that things scheduled for the late 1970s and early 1980s seemed so far away and futuristic! Guess I'm starting to get old, or something ...

I was probably a bit too young to appreciate how intricately some of the things were made (I'm into learning about historical reconstructions now) -- but I do recall how bright and new-looking the artifacts were. (No wonder, since gold doesn't tarnish.) There was so much stuff on display that there was something to interest everybody -- I'm sure your daughter will find it memorable!

p.s. the teacher who supervised us on the trip passed away, a couple of years ago ... but I'll always remember what she said when one of my classmates asked her (in the weeks leading up to the exhibit, when she had us studying ancient history as preparation for the field trip) -- "Do you think King Tut would be angry that they took all his things for people to look at?" (She'd already told us about the alleged "curse" since kids love that!) Her response was that, even though it's difficult to guess how someone from a past time might respond to something going on in our society -- this exhibit was contributing to his immortality. It might even please him that children thousands of miles away and ages later were learning about him. (The mischievous kids were unusually well-behaved on the trip -- though I don't know whether it was because they were stunned by the cultural splendor, or because they were scared that Anubis would seek revenge if they weren't properly respectful in front of the sarcophagus!)

9. I did
at the New York metropolitan. It was great. I remember HUGE lines. I was lucky to get tickets - my father had a student with connections and got us some.

14. I took the day off to wait in those lines...
for the free tix. No lines if you wanted to pay.

Then, on the appointed day, the lines to get in were almost as long.

It was amazing, though. Got four tix, and my stepfather, who was a high-end jeweler, was one of the four. He was amazed to see that the techniques they used to work the gold and set the jewels were almost identical to what's being done now.

12. No Coffin Mask?!?!
Grrrr, that bums me out! The most famous item - the coffin mask isn't there. Egypt won't let it leave (understandably)

I was so looking forward to that one, because I still have a picture of my dad who passed away face to face with that mask and I wanted to make my own :(

Still gonna go though!

13. In S. F. tacked on at the end of the official tour
You must be a great parent trying to give your kid a bit of historical/cultural perspective. Would you care to adopt me, even though I am old enough to be your mother? I would love to see it again.

17. Any D'er's within a day's drive need to get your butts out to see it!
Really...But, I hope that it's the same as what I saw. With the Busholini's in charge maybe they corrupted it like they do everything else...and they cut the exhibit from what I saw "way back when" but chek Google and do a comparison. Don't want anyone ripped off...but if even a "HALF" of what I saw in DC is on Exhibit...you won't be sorry you saw it... But, if "they corrupted it" then, I don't know.

:-(

19. I wish it was coming to Memphis!
The Pyramid would have been the perfect venue for this. We usually get most of the major touring exhibits, including one a couple of years ago featuring ancient Egyptian artifacts. I'm surprised this one isn't hitting us, although I see it isn't touring to very many places in the US.
