Poll question: The shaved head is the mullet of the 90's: Yea or nay?

In ten years, all these guys with completely bald heads are going to look as silly as guys with mullets do now. I stand by this statement and will defecate in my hand and throw it at you if you disagree.

But seriously: look at Jeff Gannon and G. Gordon Liddy and tell me they're not the Brian Bosworth and the Billy Ray Cyrus of right now, hairwise.

Here's why: mullets are ugly on EVERYONE. Shaved heads look good on some. But far too many get them who shouldn't, especially white guys. As unfortunate as they may look, they can't compete with the mullet on the hideous scale.

27. Substitute "Mullet" for "Shaved heads" and "Feathered hair"
for "Mullet" in your above post and you have just created what people were saying in 1989. (Of course, they didn't call it the "mullet" in 1989. They called it the "Boz" or the "Hockey Haircut" back then.)

She had more hair on top than I think would be permissible in a true mullet. I've actually heard her haircut referred to as a mullet before, though, which is why I was joking about it; some people have a very loose definition of what qualifies as a mullet.

Shags usually look okay; much better than mullets for sure!

26. I have to disagree.
A.) As stated previously, no one in the history of the world has ever looked good in a mullet whereas a pretty chunky proportion of men look OK with a shaved head and B.) at least 80% of the male professors and grad students at my university had shaved heads (mostly as a poor disguise for oncoming baldness.) What will happen to them if we eliminate this option? I tend to associate it more with intellectuals than anything else.

39. Counterpoint:
A.) As stated previously, no one in the history of the world has ever looked good in a mullet

If this is true, why did anyone EVER have mullet in the first place? There was a sizable crosssection of the male body politic with mullets in the late 80's/early 90's. Back then, they thought they were stylin'. Now, of course, we look back and laugh. Fashions change, and whenever they do, people act as if 'twas ever thus, and that the fashions of the future will obtain at the current level forever, but it ain't true! Which is why people bought all those disco albums back in the late 70's, then all those dumb new wave albums in the early 80's, then all those shitty dance-pop albums in the late 80's, then all those grunge albums in the early 90's, then all those shitty techno-hiphop albums in the late 90's, etc.....But when you point out the cyclical nature of this stuff, people get uptight.

Why is it not acceptable to look at TODAY'S version of the mullet and laugh?

42. There's no excuse for a mullet. Not even peer pressure.
And I think the shaved thing is more than just a fashion. It's a way for aging guys to make baldness look like a choice rather than a submission to the ravages of time.

How many forty year old men do you know with waist length hair? It's not just due to changing fashions. As your hair gets thinner, it looks stringy and even thinner than it actually is when you wear it long. That's why so many grannies have short hair. So the shaved guys are just taking the "thin hair should be short" principle to its logical conclusion. Sometimes they pull it off, sometimes they don't. But I don't think it reflects on their overall intelligence in the same way that a mullet does.

I used to shave my head back in the late 80's when everyone was wearing mullets.

In a few years, some other look will supplant the shaved head, and we'll all act embarrassed when someone finds a picture of us with shaved heads "back then."

I'm saying: why not be embarrassed NOW? Embarassment is my fetish.

44. I just don't see how it's comparable to the mullet.
A lot of men who shave their heads do so because the alternative is to have patches of hair on top, or no hair on top, with just a fringe around the back and sides.

The mullet strikes me as more of a choice. There are better alternatives available. But what are the alternatives for a balding man? Transplants? A toupee? The dreaded combover?

45. As I've stated previously....
NATURALLY bald men have an "out" here. It's the guys who aren't balding, who think that they're capturing the "zeitgeist," brushing up against the technofied, post-genX, streamlined aesthetic by shaving their heads who deserve to be strung up by their toenails and drained of blood and fed to radioactive seagulls.

Take a look at the post titled "Exhibit b" upwards of this post. Therein lies a guy (Joe Satriani) who will regret his fashion decisions seven years from now. I COULD go google another pic of the same guy "capturing the zeitgeist" of the late 80's, with his curly mullet tendrils dangling down, tickling his lumbar region like tiny slalmander tongues....Mindless followers of fashion, as opposed to independent thinkers.

It's the same way with music; people get defensive when you point out to them that their current favorites might not sound so great ten years from now...but they're the same dudes who were listening to C+C Music Factory in 1991, but who look back and giggle when they think back about what they were doing back then.

My point is that people rarely step outside of time and realize that trends are cyclical; they instead front like the shit they're into RIGHT NOW will always be cool.

To sum up: the current fashions will look stupid ten years from now. Shaved heads are a current fashion (now on the wane, thank god), and are not immune to this truth.

or post-Xer? I associate it with guys of a certain age. It was trendy and now it's kind of a cliche. I understand why they do it, and maybe it does look better than the eventual tonsure. However, I am not sure it has the same vibe as a mullet, seems like a different class sensibilty.

What should I do? All the people judging others and accusing them of having a "herd mentality" and looking "ridiculous". I'm so confused.

Should I follow THOSE people over there who say that fake-bald heads look silly and that I should let my "hair" grow?

55. I tend to agree
However, I will of course make the exception for those who decide to shave because of balding reasons; that's a logical choice. But yes, in terms of the guys in their teens and twenties (and sometimes older), who in most cases aren't doing it because they're balding but because they're trying to look "cool", but that it doesn't even look good on... yes, I think it's the current equivalent of the mullet. It's a style that will have its day in the sun and that many will later try to pretend never happened.

61. They shave today, and when they're in their 50's.....
...they'll be poppin' Rogaine like it was Tic-Tacks.

Go ahead and shave your head. I imagine there's something about my appearance that you think is pretty fucking stupid looking, too.

62. Some ways yes, others no....
I gather it's really popular nowadays over there in North America (well Canada and the US anyways). I had my head shaved from about 91-96, and it was really catching on by 95.
Now I have hair, but some days I really feel the urge to shave it off again, cause it was really convenient, and I have a pretty good shaped head (plus it's so much fun to rub your head after a couple of days of growth).

To say it's the mullet of the 90's might be a bit of a stretch, but I can see the comparison.

68. Okay first of all, posting that pic was WRONG!
For shame!

Second of all... this turned into a FLAME WAR? Unbelievable! Okay, well, not really... but still!

And third of all... some people look stupid with them, but I find some of them sexy. I have never found anyone with a mullet sexy, so the answer is no.

I must admit, though, that the combination of baldness with facial hair does irritate me, for some reason I don't understand.
