Mel Gibson Calls Oscars "Ludicrous"

Mel Gibson has denounced the Oscar ceremonies as "a celebration of mediocrity" and accused academy members of treating his The Passion of the Christ as a political football. "My film is not right-wing or political, but they made it so," he told an interviewer on the Catholic cable channel EWTN (Eternal Word Television Network). Gibson, who won an Oscar for his direction of Braveheart in 1995, remarked: "The whole notion of these awards ceremonies is ludicrous. ... It's really a marketing exercise." He said he decided not to promote the film for Oscar consideration because he realized that doing so would be futile. "I knew exactly what was going to happen. I didn't try to market the film. People are spending 15 or 20 million dollars to market their films. That's a lot of money for a little gold statue."

I don't think the word "loser" really applies to somebody worth umpteen zillion dollars after making a film everybody and their little sister thought was a bad idea.

I'm sure MG is crying all the way to the bank. Just wish I could lose at something that badly.

12. what awards did you expect?
best foreign language film?
best adapted screenplay? (can you see that speech? "uh, I'd like to thank the authors of this story, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. I'd also like to thank Jesus for being such an inspiration to me, and I'd especially like to thank God, for sending his only child down to be slaughtered by the romans, which served as the inspiration for this script. also, I don't want to forget my agent, my lawyer, by banker and my girlfriend, I love you honey!"

17. I consider The Passion of the Christ to be quite a clever film...
I mean how else could you get such a brutal gore flick past the censors and right wing nutjobs and use the controversy of the brutality to stir up buzz? Change the setting and the main character, keep the brutality, and there is no fucking way the censors and funementalist freaks would allow such a movie to be released.

I just see it as a ludicrous yet clever way for Mel to line his pockets.

20. When was the last time
a gore-fest made the Oscar hot list?

Historical or not, that was flat out bloodier than any number of slasher flicks.
